Definately need to play Good Friday and im all for 2 games on Friday night like the NRL.

Would like to see a fair draw of everyone plays everyone once at home & once away but cant see a 34 game season happening. I think the EPL does it though & play about 40 games a year plus champions league games (can someone confirm). Maybe p!ss off the crap pre season games to accommodate this.

I think they should make it so sides play each other just once a season - 17 home and away games each. If in one season you play a side away you will get them at home next year.
This will make the competition much closer to being equitable.

38 games per year in the EPL plus Cup games. Some clubs can play up to 60 games per season with solid cup runs. Bear in mind they often play 2 games per week and their season goes for 9-10 months

Unless you play a significant proportion of the season on grounds that dont have cricket, there isnt too many more weeks in the year that can be used.

and shortening the season, whilst the best way to get a wholly equitable competition, would be a massive hit to the game commercially, in crowds, TV rights, and also losing traction to rugby which would have a good couple of months of unhindered exposure.

of course it sucks that commercial pressures exist, but they do.

they also have much larger squads, and injury rates are much lower. also given the amount and force of contact is much lower, less recovery time is needed. more prudent comparing with NFL which has a shorter season than the AFL, and all rugby codes which would have similar length seasons (unless somewhere overseas has a much longer season)

Pretty spot on although ill take you up on a couple of your soccer statements. The squads are not larger, its just that soccer only have 11 on the pitch so always plenty of depth, and regarding injuries, soccer has just as many injuries as AFL, not as many knees or serious ones but plenty more groin and other muscle injuries.

yeah when i said squad sizes i meant as a percentage of the players on the field. i just googled and by the looks of it an EPL squad is 25 players, plus an unlimited amount of signings under the age of 21, which is pretty significant. I would say they would be looking at squads of 35-40 but happy to be corrected on that by people that know more about it than i do.

and it would be interesting to get actual data on the soft tissue injury rates. I would actually think they might be similar. in terms of overall numbers to aussie rules, but as you point out, much less serious impact injuries (maybe lower leg and ankle injuries but even they are rare in soccer)

according to this source afl has a 31% injury rate (defined as the percentage of people that have been injured in a 6 month period) comared with soccer at 25%, so there are 25% more injuries in aussie rules than in soccer. rubgy union is in the lead with 36%

this report talks about injuries that require hospitalisation, and for Aussie rules it is about 730 hospitalisations per 100k participants, compared with soccer which looks to be around 240, (and incidentally this has AFL as higher than both league and union)

it also shows that soccer has a much higher rate of knee and lower leg injuries than football, and it is actually head injuries and wrist and hand injuries that seem significantly higher in AFL than in Soccer

pulled some of the graphs from that report.

note that they are injuries that require hospitalisation, so this is only a relatively small subset of all injuries. hence why fractures and head injuries are quite high. it would look different when you count things like muscle strains etc. I havent found a source purely on muscle strains, but ill have a look

That graph makes perfect sense.

Soccer and Touch are non contact sports.
Union is a slow rubbish game
League is a game if high impact collisions
AFL is a sport when you can be attacked from any angle and so harder to brace and more margin for error

yep exactly. that contact aspect makes games like league and AFL almost impossible to play with less than 5-6 days break. hence why we dont have midweek games like in soccer, where recovery times are more dictated by recovery of muscles etc rather than bruises, hence their ability to play more games. similar for basketball etc.

also compare with tennis, which is probably one of the most physically demanding sports going around, but because there is no contact they are able to get up for another game 2 days later.

It will most likely be the case.

With the Cricket World Cup at the G, the final 29th March, it will we at least a week after that with the removal of drop in pitches etc. So somewhere into April and I think Easter falls a week earlier in the calendar next year. ( Easter Sunday April 5 2015 )

Likely to be only one split round in 2015, an October Grand Final.
