How do I get free software allowing me to do this?

When I google it, it takes me to all sorts of sites that I have no idea if the software in genuine or not.

Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortuantely I think you need to actually purchase the Adobe PDF pack to be able to create PDF files or convert PDF to Word/Excel etc

yep, if you have Office 2007 or later, just save as, and you can save as a PDF.

before that time i used to use this http://www.primopdf.com/ which essentially created a "printer" which would let you print to a pdf file.

my mac lets me print to PDF natively too, and a lot of printer drivers these days will do the same as above.

You can also use the free Apache Open Office, which offers the save as PDF option - it makes sense to change its defaults to saving files in Microsoft format rather than in its own format, for their future compatibility with MS Office.

Another free alternative is software called Bullzip PDF Printer which becomes one of your installed printers and can be selected when printing from any source and automatically converts the input into a PDF file you can name and save wherever you select

And you can use CutePDF to create a PDF from any kind of document (it appears in your list of printers in any software you can print from - browser, office software, image viewers etc.).

Found the option to save as a PDF last night at home, didnt know that existed

The emailing of docs to and from work to do this is no longer required!

The problem is the cycle is getting faster - new processors, more complex software to use them, new operating systems that won't work on old equipment.

Currently I'm having trouble about a software package I use which installs its own SQL instance. My W7 Pro 32 bit i5 based system struggles to run it efficiently, mainly because of the RAM limit, but I don't want to make that machine 64 bit because of some legacy software I like to use at times. However, my newer i7 runs 64 bit W8 Pro and the software won't install the newest update because they have not yet managed to make it work with W8's UAC system.

There are companies still using XP because of the cost of re-writing specialist software to suit anything else - as I found when I was working in the public health services in WA several months ago. The had i5 computers having to run XP Pro 32 bit because the hospitals didn't have the money to have the recording software that exchanges information between hospitals revised.

Using 32 bit software on a 64 but machine is no issues at all, it is the other way around.

But yeah there will likely still be some issues with W8

Lots of 32 bit software won't run on 64 bit operating systems. Usually custom built crap.

Certainly the "PSOLIS" software used by the WA Health Service is - even their chief of development says so.

They just can't raise the money to replace it, so they are buying i5 machines with 4GB or more of RAM, and strangling them with 32 bit XP Pro in the hope they'll get to upgrade the software during the life of the machinery.
