So if the Hawks were good enough they'd have won on Subiaco. They weren't though. They had to wait for the Eagles to come to their home ground.
Really you should say, if a team from outside Victoria is good they can win anywhere, but a Victorian club only needs to be good enough to win in its home state, and in some cases its home ground.
And if West Coast were good enough they would have won the GF. They weren't though. BTW Hawks did win at Subiaco, they beat the top side there in the preliminary final. This game could have been played anywhere & I reckon Hawthorn would have won.
First, thanks for answering one of the questions I have been putting out. In your opinion Hawthorn would have won the grand final wherever it was played. However, they were denied the chance to prove it, so we'll never know. Finishing higher on the ladder than your grand final opponent, and winning all other finals should cancel out the need "to win wherever it is played". This is the second year in the row Hawthorn have benefited from the automatic home grand final system. Discussing this obvious discrepancy is a taboo it seems.
Second, Hawthorn beat a disappointing Fremantle at Subiaco, which almost dropped their previous match at home to a very undermanned Sydney side. But when the Hawks met West Coast in Perth they were so badly brushed up that most commentators were saying that was the end of them. You cannot measure the Eagles by weighing the Dockers. But both Hawthorn and West Coast were just as bad playing on the other's home deck.
Third, a lot of posters are saying how great Hawthorn is having to travel to Perth, twice. Those same posters are refusing to even discuss the advantage Hawthorn would have had playing the grand final at home. They can't have it both ways.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail
