I was at this match and from memory it really wasn't that remarkable a game. The only thing that was of interest was they moved it to Sunday afternoon to accommodate the telecast of Lady Di's funeral the night before (which was shown on every channel IIRC).

Hawthorn's massive comeback after being down by 8 goals at half-time, 51 goals scored in total. Gavin Excell scored 9, Dunstall and Brereton combined for the same amount, and Buckenara with 5 too.
Certainly a preview of what the grand final would hold.
I remember that game, both clubs had so much firepower in front of goal back in those days. They also played a thriller in the final round of 1987 that had important implications for the standing of the final 5 (along with Melb v Footscray at the same time).
I had this game on VHS....someone from this site borrowed it, years ago, I can't remember who though!

Fantastic (except if you were barracking for Woodville!). That's the great thing about the game of Australian Rules - it's designed to be fast and attacking. Back then the game was played as it should be. Now too many footy 'thinkers' are doing the only tactical thing you can do when the game gets too fast - slow it down. Pity, talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Got the Swans v Saints game where Caven got his face caved in tonight. I laugh at this as one commentator (I forget who) said Lockett did nothing wrong and then because there is only 2500 people in the crowd you can hear everything the crowd is yelling at Lockett. It's **** gold!
Can you bring a man to his feet when defeat is on repeat?

Was that the same game the Pig was put onto the Oval, or is that a different one?

Pig incident was a year earlier. The Caven game in 1994 was a beauty, saints were 7 or 8 goals down at 3/4 time.

Cheers mate .. I remembered they were a mile down and came from the clouds.
Next question - was Nathan Buckley underrated by most non-Collingood people?

Reckon Lockett walked into an open goal at the left of screen end as the Saints were making their comeback and speared his kick straight at that group of old farts who always were sitting there. He may have also given them the Bird after that goal. Hilarious! The days when footy stil had a character or two.

Good question. He may have been by judges outside of Victoria. Obviously the media exposure, the coverage of Collingwood games when he was at his very best might have been limited outside of Melbourne. I never rated him anything but an absolute star. His foot skills would stand up as some of the best in any era.
Another question, how would a midfield of Voss, Black, Buckley, Akermanis and Co. have done for Brisbane?
