What an outstanding night, simply brilliant, by The Living End and Dan Sultan, anyway.

Got to the zoo around 5:00, gates 5:30, about 200 people already lined up and we thought we'd be struggling, oh no, with 3000 coming in and us in the first 250 or so we were just fine, in fact, our picnic rug was against the fence adjacent the stage. Front row! Nice. Had about an hour to wander around the zoo, looked at a couple of displays and back to the spot for a couple of beers before the warm up.

Oh, dear. Triple J found Gabrielle Cohen, not sure where, not sure how, not sure why The Living End thought she'd be a good warm up. Played about 8 songs, all depressingly similar, all slow melodic rubbish, just did not enjoy it at all and I'm not sure anyone there did to be honest.

TLE were on by just after 8pm, played around 6 or so acoustic tunes then despite, as Chris Cheney put it "some requests from the zoo keepers" they ditched the acoustic get up and went electric. Played about 7 or so more, including a couple of rockabilly covers and were joined on stage by a suitably tanked Dan Sultan. Cheney is also playing St Jimmy in the Greenday musical in Brisbane at the moment ( sharing the role with Phil Jamieson ) so any chance to give the voice a break was taken.

Sultan slotted in perfectly and I was not aware how good he could play the guitar, very proficient. Not as good as Cheney who, for those who haven't seen live, is just out of this world. He really is gifted. Sultan fronted for White Noise, Rock this House, and Save Us before leaving the stage to let TLE finish with Prisoner of Society.

On the lawns in the zoo, $7.50 ( obviously 2 for $15 with my mate ) beers, $10 spirits, plenty of cool food trucks ( about 5 ) to choose from, lots of families, twilight acoustic into electric after dark and one of the more polite crowds I've been in made for an outstanding night. Really was something to remember. Luckily I brought home the set list to remind me of it over and over.
