Pulteney vs Houghton Districts
Interesting clash scheduled at Morgan Oval this weekend, as the powerhouse side of Pulteney host the surprise pack of the season, Houghton Districts.
Pulteney were always expected to be a pace setter this season, coming down from D5R after only dropping 2x games on the way to winning the premiership. Their ability to strangle sides of scoring opportunities, combined with powerful running capacity and support running made them a potent force, as they conceded an average of 47 points per game and broke the 100 point barrier on 9 occasions - including mammoth totals of 193 (Rd 13 vs Greenacres), and 154 (Rd 15 v Glenunga).
Pulteney C Grade also squared off in the C4 Grand Final, on the back of an inspired season from Lacrosse player turned footballer Jesse Whinnen, so depth was unlikely to be a concern heading into 2017.
The Blues haven't disappointed expectations in the early stages of 2017, recording emphatic wins (112 pts & 86pts) to sit only percentage off top spot.
Houghton on the other hand battled through 2016, only tasting victory on two occasions in Round 7 by a solitary point over Mawson Lakes, and Round 18 over wooden spoon side Fitzroy. The Raiders only managed to score more than 50 points on 3 occasions, as kicking goals became as much a minor victory as anything. Belted regularly , none bigger than the 204 point demolition at the hands of West Croydon late in the year, Houghton did it tough in 2016.
Fast forward to season 2017, a new coach, a new look outfit and a renewed vigor and Houghton find themselves equal top of the table - with as many wins as they secured for the entire season last year. If their 60 point Round 1 win against Mawson Lakes didn't raise eyebrows, the shock Round 2 annihilation of West Croydon by 93 points - an incredible 297 point turnaround from last time they met - definitely made people turn heads and take notice. The Raiders were no longer going to be classed as the easy beats.
Ferrall with 6 goals on debut last round looks a key pick up, and with Pennycuick (5), Kerrigan (4), Allen (4) and Henderson (3) the Raiders are finding goals with regular ease. Big man Glanville is having a great start to the year, whilst Rogers, Gordon and Simpkins are thriving off his presence.
For Pulteney, Barmby has relished his opportunity in the magoos, filling the void left by Sampson, with the strong marking, crafty veteran forward kicking 11 goals this season to sit 2nd on the goal kicking tally. His presence has released the pressure from regular forward target Nicholson, who has kicked 6 goals to amply support Barmby. Second in the goal kicking last season, it's only a matter of time before Nicholson has a big day out.
Van Den Munckhof, Kimber, Kikianis and strong bodied midfielder Sanderson have enjoyed successful starts to the season, while key players Porteous and Rosengarten ease into the season.
Whilst Houghton are unlikely to have the running capacity to match the Blues, if they can nullify their space to run from behind and use of the corridor, they may be able to maintain for a period of the game.
No one would be surprised if Pulteney win, as many are expecting, but the result will be viewed with greater anticipation, and give punters are greater insight and indication into the resurgence of the Raiders. This match has little to do with Pulteney, and is more about answering the questions:
*How much have Houghton improved?
*Are they a genuine finals contender this year?
*How will they stack up against the bench mark?
Tip: Pulteney 51 points

He played against Trinity in a 1 off game last year, so maybe he is returning the favour this weekend?
