wait, since when is saving documents to the desktop a bad idea? its where all of mine are, and after a quick look, i cant find a single mention anywhere in our intranet of that being a bad idea

Well, most of the backup software that we all should be using regularly tends to default to backing up other folders like Documents, Downloads, Music, Videos, etc. So unless you are clever at configuring the software to do otherwise and disengage any automatic Desktop Cleanup accessories you are potentially likely to lose things you don't want to lose. It is easier to work with the system.

Windows 10 updates do seem to delete things they find where Microsoft thinks they shouldn't be, and to reset settings to the Microsoft approved defaults. I've lost a few icons from my desktop and they are fiddly to put back.

All my computers are set to back up to an external drive at the **click of an icon, and I've set up automated backups for my lady's laptop as she is a bit random about actively backing up.

** I just like to be in control thank you Micro$oft - which is why I still have W7 on my non-portable machine along with some old software that won't run on newer OS,and that leaves me able to dual boot that machine with Linux too.

Nice work Psyber. but external hard drives are just as fraught with danger. To the cloud my man, to the cloud!

Side note: the cloud is the biggest load of wank term I've ever come across. It just means a computer (or series of computers) which you connect to via an internet connection. Used to be called remote services but that wasn't as cool.

As I said I like to retain control and not trust my data to the network of drives on some other system somewhere in the world, or to the owners of those drives wherever they may be. I have a hot-swap set up for external drives and can lock up copies my safe or even at other premises. I had a friend in private practice who kept patient data from an Apple based medical software backed up on a commercial and allegedly secure cloud system which then got hacked. Very embarrassing...

These days of course I am not running my own practice and when I take a temporary job as a consultant interstate my employer is responsible for the data.
At home I can keep it simple because it is only my data - all the old medical practice stuff is past the mandatory time I had to keep it and paper files have been shredded and the computerised carefully erased. ( I went fully computerised in 2003 and billed by computer from 1987.)

I'd reckon the chances of losing data on an external hard drive would be greater than that of your data getting hacked from a reputable off site provider. In fact, I know the chances are greater. It's been proven multiple times.

But hey to each their own. My missus is the same. Refuses to use the cloud no matter what.

as long as you dont save it to the desktop in a corporate environment

In your case psyber you could use a backup service rather than a cloud storage service

The difference? Cloud storage is great for personal backups or being able to access your files from anywhere.

Backup services on the other hand are usually business facing and usually include encryption. Something like acronis or a multitude of others

If it were me and I was really fussy, I would leverage them all. Have 1. application redundancy (in app ctrl z type stuff), 2. backed up to database redundancy (logging and the like), 3. backed up to disc redundancy (tape etc), 4. all backed up to a private cloud.

Our entire virtual environment is backed up to the cloud these days. Dozens of servers.

Oooh, now that give me the absolute irrits. My home machine is a dual boot Windoze 10 with OpenSuse linux. Windoze' fast-boot prevents the system from cold-booting into linux, so I keep the fast-boot turned off. However every time Windoze does one of its interminable updates, it turns the bloody fast-boot back on.

Hahhaha yeah they're **** like that.

I had one where my power settings for my laptop kept getting overwritten. It's permanently connected to my TV so has it's lid shut all the time. Would take me a bit of wtf is going on for half an hour before I understood why the laptop wasn't staying on.

Correct, to many people.

Racking my brain wondering if that's a grammatical error or not, it works two of the three ways.

nah, means he's very important to many people. If he was worried about the amount of emails, it would be too many people.

What is perfectly clear though, is Booney and morell aren't on each others Christmas card lists
