Parkrun - Free weekly timed runs
For the last 2 years I have been participating in my local parkrun.
Parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in.
These events take place in pleasant parkland surroundings and we encourage people of every ability to take part; from walkers or those taking their first steps in running to Olympians; from juniors to those with more experience; we welcome you all.
There are 7 Parkruns held weekly in South Australia - Clare, Lochiel (Geoff Heath Golf Park - Campbelltown), Mount Barker, Murray Bridge, Torrens (North Adelaide) & Victor Harbor.
The things I like about parkrun are - its free, its friendly, its a non threatening environment, its encouraging, its inclusive (kids, walkers, pushers/prams, dogs on leads) and it gives me a reason to get out of bed on a Saturday morning. Parkruns are held at 8am each Saturday morning of the year.
Check out the website - http://www.parkrun.com.au
Its very simple to join in. Register on the website, and you will get an e-mail back for confirmation purposes. Print off your bar code. When you are ready to run/jog/walk - simply turn up to your preferred event, with your barcode. When you finish you will be handed a token. Present the token to the finishing officials and they will scan both your finish token and barcode. Later that day you will receive an e-mail with your result, including finishing time..... then come again next week, and try to better that time.
The first time I participated was a mixture of jogging and walking. My time was 37 minutes. Tomorrow I will start for the 70th time, and nowadays my times are 27 minutes. I have lost weight, and become a lot fitter.
Parkrun is great community stuff, and I have met a lot of friendly supportive people. Parkrun is held all over Australia, and around the world. You can run at ANY event you wish, just bring your bar code.

Very good. I did one in caloundra last when i was on holidays. I didnt know they had one in clare so i might go for a few in the summer
If you don't like it, change it. If you don't want to change it, it can't be that bad!

Great. The reason I posted this was to help get the word out there.
Enjoy your run at Clare.

Very good concept to get people into running. 5k is a tad short for my runs but otherwise I would be all for it.

Re: Parkrun - Free weekly timed runs
A good number of our regulars run half marathons and some even full marathons. Those guys use parkrun for a bit of speed work. Along with the social aspect.

Re: Parkrun - Free weekly timed runs
Sat mornings are usually reserved for my longer run for the week but I can see how people would use it for speed work. I have a 10k loop around home that I use for that and find it very beneficial.

Re: Parkrun - Free weekly timed runs
We have some fairly decent runners out. Often the first place getter is around 18 minutes. That's a good clip.
