Australian Domestic Season 2018-19

Post by Tony Clifton »

Victoria have targeted a teenage South Australian leg-spinner as the Bushrangers look to regenerate their spin stocks.

Tom O’Connell, 17, has been pursued by Victoria to join them for the upcoming season as the Bushrangers look to move on from veteran Fawad Ahmed.

O’Connell is yet to be confirmed as a recruit, however it’s understood Victoria have been in advanced discussions about poaching the young leggie, who has earnt the praise of Australian spin great Ashley Mallett.

Surely not?!

Would be terrible if we lost him. Is a serious prospect.

I believe the Vics tried to get Patrick Page a couple of years ago. Surely poaching kids from the worst-performed state is out of bounds?

I was amazed we didn't give O'Connell or Pope a gig in a Future's League game towards the end of the season.

Promising 17-year-old legspinner Tom O’Connell was offered a rookie contract but has been recruited by Victoria.

“It was disappointing to lose Tom at this early stage of his career but we wish him all the best,” Nielsen said.

“We have a policy of waiting for young players to finish their schooling before offering full contracts.

“There’s a lot of competition for our spin positions. We have (leg-spinners) Adam Zampa and Lloyd Pope on our list and Tom could see better opportunities over there.”
