Veteran journalist Michelangelo Rucci has revealed a rule change AFL Football Operations Boss Steve Hocking attempted to bring into the game for this season.

The AFL made three changes for 2021, reducing interchange and making adjustments to kick-ins and the man on the mark.


However, Rucci revealed Hocking also wanted to adjust deliberate out of bounds, changing it so defensive spoils out of bounds result in a free kick.

“I’ll give you one Steve Hocking put on the table and the clubs absolutely threw their arms up in the air on this one,” Rucci told SEN SA Breakfast.

“You’ve all been involved in marking contests near the boundary line and you know that if you’re seeking to take a mark there’ll be a defender who will seek to spoil the ball so you don’t take a mark.

“Steve Hocking wanted to introduce a rule that if the spoil went over the boundary line it would be a deliberate out of bounds free kick against you.

“Now, could you imagine how that would’ve changed the game?”

This would have caused a dramatic change to how players defended contests and added a last-touch out of bounds element to the game.

The AFL brought in even grander rule changes for the VFL competition, adding a zoning rule whereby three players from each team must be inside 50 at either end at throw-ins and kick-ins.
