Australian Domestic Season 2021/22

Post by The Dark Knight »

https://www.cricket.com.au/news/domesti ... 2021-07-21

Cricket Australia finalised its men's and women's domestic schedules today, with the Marsh Sheffield Shield returning to a full home-and-away season after it was shortened last summer due to the pandemic.

Each state will also play seven Marsh One-Day Cup games before the final on February 27.

The domestic season is scheduled to begin in less than eight weeks, with two full rounds of the Marsh Cup from September 11-16, which could allow Australia's white-ball stars to take part before they fly out for the T20 World Cup.

It remains to be seen how COVID-19 restrictions and border closures will impact the schedule.

The Sheffield Shield season will begin on September 28, its second earliest start in history, and feature five full rounds before Australia's Vodafone Men’s Test against Afghanistan in late November.

The sixth Shield round before the mid-season break will be played concurrently with that Test, while an Australia A match against the touring Englishmen will be played at the same time as the first Vodafone Ashes Test at the Gabba on December 8-12.

But for a fourth consecutive season, there are no day-night matches on the Shield schedule, even though the second Ashes Test in Adelaide will be played under lights.

There was at least one day-night Shield round for five seasons between 2013-14 and 2017-18, and in recent years, some of Australia's Test players have had pink-ball preparation via 'A' games.

Pending COVID restrictions, Shield cricket is scheduled to be played in all six states as well as one game at Manuka Oval in Canberra, with Queensland to take their home games to Townsville and the new Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane due to the redevelopment of Allan Border Field.

The Shield final will be played on March 26-30 and be broadcast on Fox Cricket and Kayo Sports. Foxtel will also broadcast 13 Marsh Cup games, including the final, while broadcast and live streaming details for the remaining domestic matches will be announced later in the year.

Peter Roach, CA's Head of Operations said he was comfortable with the 22-game Marsh Cup schedule, despite recent criticism from Australia's ODI captain, Aaron Finch, that the scarcity of 50-over domestic cricket means Australia is falling behind other nations.

The one-day cup hasn't been played as a full home-and-away season in a decade and Roach is confident the balance of the current schedule, with 31 Shield games and 22 one-dayers to go with a full home-and-away KFC BBL, is the right one, especially once easier international travel allows for the return of full 'A' series at home and abroad.

I see the first game is only 1 month away (50 over game). It would be interesting to see what lineup we go with?
I suspect all the new recruits would have the red carpet rolled out and be rewarded with selection due to the fact they are from interstate, at the expense of some of the local players? Some of them will probably be also rewarded with a BBL contract as well (a la Scott last year). Unfortunately from what I keep hearing there's bugger all chance of development for some of the local younger players as they get no coaching whatsoever and are just used as net bowlers, at the expense of all the energies being directed toward the new recruits. With Hussey recommending SACA target interstaters, that then gives them an "out" in having to develop locals. Good luck for the young local blokes in there!!!

It's more of the reason opposed to the excuse.

You can't continue to do the same thing and expect a different result.

Yes - no change at Grade Cricket level and also no change to who's in charge calling the shots either.

One day Cup supposed to start this weekend - I assume the season is being postponed due to NSW/Victoria situation?

Shield season starting couple of weeks after that, probably in some doubt as well

Couldn't they have them in quarantine now and then play out of another state.

Correct Eags - One dayers will be pushed back (not sure when). I've heard the Redbacks have a week off this week after finishing up with some internal trails last week so there won't be any games this weekend. Haven't heard who did well in these games either (in particular whether any of the new recruits impressed or if any of the young up and coming local players did well to push their case?).
As for quarantine, I believe CA are trying to not do this too much this year due to the costs involved?

CA confirmed Redbacks vs WA in one day game here at Karen Rolton on Wednesday Sep 22, followed by Shield game at same venue from Friday Sep 24. Only other games scheduled are QLD vs Tas doing the same thing in Queensland. Both VIC and NSW on hold for now.

Do SA have any games at AO this year.

We are looking to organise a Sunday Bus Trip from Spalding to AO to give our junior cricketers an up close look at shield cricket.

Would be good if it was at AO so we could maybe try and coincide an oval tour on the same day.

Refer to the first post of this topic for an idea of Redbacks fixture, SA are scheduled to play four Sheffield Shield matches at Adelaide Oval although that might all be revised now.

First games for the Redbacks next week. It's going to be interesting to see what lineups they go with? I suspect the new recruits will have the red carpet rolled out for them to justify Mr Nielsen's decision (to himself) to recruit them. I've heard a couple of the young locals were very impressive during the internal trails but won't get a look in because they're actually from SA!!

@Tony Clifton

I've wondered who Tony Clifton was for so long, I watched "Man on the moon" last night, it all makes sense now.
