How can that be sour grapes?

My first thought is that the Magarey winner will more often than not come from the team that finishes the season 1st or 2nd given victories mean increased likelihood of votes. On the other hand you'd expect more competition for these votes from within the team due the presence of multiple star players.
It may be that the sweet spot to win a Magarey factoring in the above is for those clubs that finish the season 3rd-4th.

Well the Dogs came top 3 for 11 years and only had 1 winner. 12 years!
At a real random guess with no stats im going with the winner generally comes from top 3, as you said wins enough games to get the 3 votes but I will go with their team doesn't win the flag that often as it also meant they relied more on an individual than a team of champions.

I've seen it often before and repeated again on SANFL website by Zac Milbank for this years Magarey. I'm sorry Zac but Snook and Hayes were not tied for 2nd, followed by Partington & Combe tied for 3rd. They were tied for 3rd and 5th respectively.
