AO Qualifying - 1st round:

Cruz Hewitt, wildcard qualifier, recently turned 16 son of Ley-Ley, lost to Nikoloz Basilashvili 1-6, 4-6

Bernard Tomic, ranked 214, lost to Jozef Kovalík 3-6, 1-6

Not sure what Tomic is doing still hanging around the circuit; is playing challenger events and can’t qualify for the main ATP events. Has to be living on what is left of his first few years on the tour, ‘cause he’s not making enough to cover his costs now.

Recent Prize Money:

2024 - $63K
2023 - $39K
2022 - $36K
2021 - $149K

Alcaraz getting all the favours here.
Zverez copping a warning for a late serve when it was Carlos delaying it

And the cramp should not have resulted in Carlos getting a trainer, Zverev was spot on with that complaint. Then he is three seconds late from a change of ends and gets warned, what a joke.

Great match, have to say Zverev choked though, 5-3 up in the last. But after 5 and a half hours hard to be critical. Alcaraz saving his energy in sets 3/4 when had the cramps ended up winning him the match as looked fresher at the end.

Think Sinner wins next semi in straight sets against Novak then will be too fresh for Carlos and win his third in a row pretty easily.

Zverev carried on like a pork chop, he should have been thankful that Alcaraz had that problem otherwise he would have lost in straight sets.

Alcaraz showed great maturity and smarts to not panic and slowly work his body back. He could have easily still won the 3rd as Zverev was too busy losing his cool to knuckle down and concentrate, then Alcaraz showed his class by, as in his own words, just believing in himself, to win the last 4 games to win the match.

Not the first time Zverev has blown an opportunity staring right at him, nevertheless he tried his absolute guts out but is just an edge away from the elite in the mental toughness stakes.

Zverev was very gracious at the net to congratulate Alcaraz, and in his after match presser he spoke really well and was very honest. I hope he can go that little step further as he has been knocking in the door for a while now, having lost 3 grand slam finals.

I think Sinner wins in 3 or 4 tonight, with Sunday too hard to call for me if it is Sinner and Alcaraz.

Should post in the shits thread, but it gives me the major irrits when McEnroe and Courier ‘Americanise’ players names.

FFS, the vowels in European player’s names are usually short … it’s Jock-o-vich, not Joke-oh-vich … so faarking disrespectful.
