Round 3 South v Central

South gave it a good fight with it only being 10 points the difference entering time on in the last quarter but Centrals a bit too classy (and a South bloke missing a shot running into an open goal didn't help).
Geez McLennan played a good game in defence for the Dogs.

4 goal win against a team who refused to go away. Sort of game we could have dropped in previous seasons.
Luca Whitelum and Maddi Liddy best IMO. Luca bounced back after a quiet game last week and Liddy is rapidly developing into a top class SANFL player.
Gasper kicked 5 before twinging a hammie.
Schiller and Jezza were instrumental, esp in the last quarter with 8 and 11 possessions respectively.

Sampson was damaging for South but ran out of legs and Freitag and Fitt created match up problems for our defence.

Further mentions to Harry who saw plenty of it and Pudney who was also valuable on a wing providing run and options. The defensive unit as a whole put in a good shift, repelling many 50 entries.
Difficult to gauge a form line out of this one.. South, if not for a sluggish start certainly could have won this, whereas the Dogs probably would have lost this last year.
Upshot being take South at Noarlunga lightly at your peril..

Not because we lost but I thought the umpiring was pretty ordinary... it seems that ducking your head into an oncoming tackle has progressed from the afl into the sanfl. The last time South got a free kick inside 50m david kantilla had a shot for goal.
Centrals a very good side and will be there when the whips are cracking in September. We had something near our best side on paper so far this year on the park and were good in patches, but succumbing to pressure and coughing the ball up at the most inopportune times cost us dearly . Dogs made us pay for every mistake. Some of our youngsters are going to be very good players ( if we can hang on to them) but still need to find consistency.

Freitag kicked 2 goals from frees in the 2nd qtr.
Wilkinson also received a free 30 out in the 3rd.

Hmmm. I recall South scoring two goals directly from free kicks, one in the goal square.

To your other point, some players have perfected that art of ensuring they are always tackled high. In this era, where high hits are trying to be avoided, it is an issue.
I imagine these players may miss out on genuine free kicks once the umpiring fraternity realise the tactics they are employing.

The umpires are aware of the tactic just like they are in the AFL. Problem being we are talking absolute grey areas that umpires are required to adjudge.

I reckon the umpires would fear a non call of too high more than a wrong call of high, given how they would look if a player come off with concussion and they don't call it a free kick regardless of whether its the players fault or not.

Tough times for umpires.

Thought the guys over possessed the footy at times, and the defensive work rate of the forwards was pretty ordinary. As some Eagles fans have said Pudney can get the ball but boy he can turn it over as well.

Like others have said we have had our struggles at Noarlunga and in recent years probably would have dropped that game, especially with Grace, Dudley and Pearce being quiet for the majority of the game. Sign of a good team though to be able to get the ugly wins.

I think that's a fair assessment. Once we got out to a 26 point lead in the first 10 minutes, we didn't carry on from there, which is reflected in the final margin also being 26 points.

Still, better to be giving out 26 point leads to start the game than conceding a big score to start the game, which we've had plenty of in the past.

And a win at Noarlunga is a win at Noarlunga, given it's our first win there since the 2015 de facto Elimination Final.
