2013 all over again.

The problem is there's a yes man mentality which pervades the SANFL and many of its clubs.

Still awaiting Kurt Slaven et al to explain the benefits of having the cancers destroy the comp.

I just want my boys to see a premiership, then we're done. This crap is too disheartening. Spineless "leaders", and a competition with no integrity. Curse you Trigg, Tripodi, Olsen, Thomas, Pickard, Koch and the 6 SANFL club presidents.

In 2029
There will be northern dogs, southern cats, eastern blue legs and the western birds that will be part of a 6 team comp that also has the AFL reserves

Our only hope is that the players are invested in our clubs as much as we are, as they will have the right to refuse as one player allegedly ahs done.

How long that last is to be seen.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

If a player is playing in the SANFL for one of the 8 clubs, what benefit would there be to him to be snatched by either the power or crows.

Got no real problem if they picking a young (U/21) player with a guarantee they're going to get drafted in June its more them picking a mature SANFL player from a SANFL club just to play SANFL which weakens the opposition and makes them stronger. How does that help development when the competition is compromised.

However, Kudos to Port for picking a future AFL player as opposed to an SANFL list clogger like Toby Murray  and doesnt address their needs - how many bog average key forwards can you have (Himmelberg, Gollant, Burgess and Murray)

Agreed.

I don't like them picking someone like Matt Allen, who's named in the article. Had a go at AFL and wasn't up to it, but is a gun state league player.

Cherrypicking these blokes will make a mockery of the league.

Can anyone answer this? My understanding is that there have been less restrictions in the past few years.

There were changes from 22 - 23.

Their marquee player no longer had to be at least 26 and the contract length was extended from 12 months to 24 months.
They were also allowed to add a rookie to their squads and father/son and academy rookies no longer needed their SANFL club's permission to join the AFL reserves team.

Also from 21-22 they could start playing activated subs, could add any delisted AFLplayer who had not played AFL or State league in the past 12 months (was 24 months previously), a player who has served a min of 10 years on either team's list could be included in the supp list, the range of interstate players they could add was extended from 19yo-21yo to 19yo-23yo and access to father son prospects who were 18.

Ther may have been others too, but that was the main changes for 2 seasons.

Members of SANFL clubs are/have been taken for granted. The SANFL clubs have banked on ongoing money generated from the AFL to survive, at the expense of the league competition. That was the decision in 2014 and they've doubled down on it now.

The worse case scenario it seems, is the formation of an AFL Reserves league. Something the SANFL have no control over and seems will inevitably happen. The AFL Reserves sides are complaining now they are not strong enough, due to the restrictions on their playing list by the SANFL, and want to join the VFL. What will happen when the competition they are facing is not strong enough? They'll move on regardless.

It seems to me the SANFL are going to go it alone at some point. They would have been in a stronger position in 2014 to do this. Ten years later, at least there have been no AFL premierships, but the position is weaker. Kids have had 10 years to go for the Crows or Port in both competitions. As we go further, the SANFL diehard has been further eroded and the decisions made have made it hard to generate any new supporters, besides the families and friends of the players.

I wonder what the alternative would've been if Port had've just been left free to join the VFL in 1990 and cut off all ties with the SANFL? Maybe we would've still had Woodville and West Torrens? Or if there had been no formation of the Magpies after they joined the AFL in 1997. I can't help but feel the longer the SANFL want to keep Port in the SANFL the worse off we are.

What I was told in 1990 by a number of Torrens people including Board members was that Torrens were insolvent at the end of 1990 and were to be wound up by their creditors. Furthermore their Board members were liable for outstanding debts and would have been out of pocket themselves. Either the merge would still have happened or sadly Torrens would have ceased to exist.
Woodville were solvent, but they thought they had a bleak future. Clearly the merger has formed a very strong club.
