Do that for four quarters, even write the names down if needed.
I still think we're making it too hard. Four blokes studying stats and videos.
These guys are not full time.
Just one cast votes and be done with it

A lot write down their top 5 at each quarter time break (at community level).

These guys are full time umpires, they don't have day jobs.

Oh really when were umpires made full time?

I was under the impression that they are when I was at an Adelaide Footy League umpires seminar where an AFL boundary umpire was the guest speaker.

Given the hours of training, travel and their pay it seemed like a given, I'll accept that I'm wrong though.

Their time trial requirements are insane.

Was only just reading an article about Razor Ray, he has been working part time (in the same industry as me) in a flexible role that complimented his footy commitments and can now go flat out on it post retirement.

I think they should be full time, they could do midweek school and development games to work on their craft away from the AFL spotlight. Along with AFLW.

Or perhaps they could study the rules during the week.

There's your problem right there.
They're predominantly Victorian!

I dont think the lack of knowledge around the rules is the issue, its the interpretation and also team work now there are 4 of them, if they get an extra game or two during the week this will only help.

They need to be trained to take all emotive decisions out of their mind.
Eg. A player chips an umpire for a dodgy decision.... like light hearted banter.

Straight away he could be best on ground but won't get 3 votes and will win no 50/50 decisions.

It's not ALL umpires but the ones that are a little thin skinned, inexperienced or have no sense of humour.

Yeah, my comment was tongue in cheek, I wouldn't want to umpire AFL for the life of me, the rules are ridiculous, the interpretation between umpires is insanely different and there is little room for common sense in todays game.

Easily the worst officiated professional sport in the world.

Still run like the VFL.

Brownlow Medal, Coleman Medal, Grand Final locked in at Melbourne, still referring to the non Victorian teams as interstate clubs.
