Well done Batman and SCIB's, both teams had plenty of chances to secure the win and SCIB's took more of them than Lofty. Both clubs had great seasons and it was a worthy GF.

The GF Wrap
From The Fluerieu App

By Anthony Tucker

Scott Creek Ironbank (SCIB) won their first Hills Cricket Association (HCA) ‘A’ grade premiership in 19 years following a nail-biting one-run victory against Mount Lofty at Heathfield Oval yesterday. The Redcaps began the final over of the game needing six runs to win with last pair Dave Bennett and Max Hawke at the crease. SCIB bowler Beau Thomas (1/30) was entrusted with bowling the last over of the season and he proved to be the hero. The final over went for just four runs to set off wild scenes of celebration for the SCIB faithful as their side prevailed by the barest of margins.

Earlier, Redcaps skipper Jordan Neis-Beer won the toss and had no hesitation in sending SCIB into bat on a cool but fine day. Scott Creek Ironbank got off to an excellent start with Thomas Watton and skipper Adam Shearwood putting on 107 runs for the first wicket before Watton departed for 35 (83 balls). Shearwood was next to go for a fine 67 (109 balls), courtesy of a brilliant direct hit run out by Adam Carthew from backward point as Shearwood came back for a second run. The Redcaps were turning the screws with the ball and in the field as regular wickets fell. Daniel Desengo with 29 (34 balls) was the only other batsman to reach double figures as his side posted 9/176 from their 45 overs. Josh Healey was the surprise packet with the ball as he snared 3/34 from his nine overs of medium pace bowling. Carthew bowled well to finish with 2/28 (9) and also took an absolute ‘screamer’ in the gully to dismiss Aaron Thompson.

The Redcaps lost opener Nick Justice early but his opening partner Healey took the SCIB bowling on, smashing a quickfire 61 from 55 balls (6 x 4’s, 3 x 6’s) as the Redcaps reached 1/72. After Healey’s dismissal, the game tightened up as regular wickets fell with Ben Thomas, a veteran from the last Scott Creek Ironbank ‘A’ grade premiership in 2004/05, snaring 3/14 from four overs, while Daniel Key took 2/34 (9). Carthew (22), Brad Hutton (19) and Peter Giannes (18) all made handy contributions but it wasn’t enough as the Redcaps came up short at 9/175.

It was a fitting end to a great season in the HCA with the competition extremely tight as was proven in the final game of the season.

Thanks Dutchy and Corona Man. Was an incredible game we were just lucky enough to come out on the winning side. Lofty are a great side.

Just a fairytale season really for SCIB, last 3 wins for the season came against a red hot meadows, 2 time reigning premiers Stirling and a formidable lofty side. Also hadn't beat lofty at lofty since December 2012.

Will there be cricket played at the Summit this season ??
At the recent AGM of A&EHCA it was moved that A&EHCA exercise their right to terminate their license agreement with SS&R park due to prohibitive costs that were basically sending the Association broke.
Think part of the process is that 6 months notice must be given so be interesting to see if games are played there for part of the season at least ??

Not at all surprised it has come to this as the Council are completely oblivious to the financial limitations a Country Cricket Association has.

Probably won't be which is a shame because it's a great surface for playing cricket on but the cost is just way too much.

From the financials tabled at the AEHCA AGM...

Expenses charged to AEHCA for 2023/24 financial year were: License fee $15K, water $10K, insurance $4K, electricity $3.5K, security $2.5K, Gas $1.5K, other $300. Total of $37K (up from $33K in prior year)

AEHCA recouped $13.5K in rental/hire fees.

So a shortfall faced by AEHCA of $23.5K. It was used for around 50 games apparently, which includes a lot of junior games.

SACA helped out in 2022/23 via a $15K grant, but AEHCA still took a hit of about $5K that year.

Not sustainable.

Wow, thats near enough to 2k per week, aint no country club that would even pay 10% of that per week for oval use.
I dont what the average cost is in the Hills for oval hire for a season would be but id guess no more than 5k. And i think that would be at the expensive end.

Was there not a plan for a cricket & football club to be based there?

Or was it intended as a neutral "association run" ground?

Cant see the footy club going back there anytime soon. Quite happy being back at the old ground this season.

Cricket was always to be a neutral ground with any clubs being able to express their desire to play their home games there.
Mt Barker have the majority of games there understandably along with Hahndorf and Nairne i think have had a mix of junior and A Grade games there.

Mt Barker CC lease the Clubrooms

Havent yet heard if the Association have received a response from Council who have been hopeless in the whole negotiating process.

Sounds like there has been a bit of movement between HCA clubs in the off season.

1 from Aldgate to Kangy; 1 from Kangy to SCIB.

Round 1 - Oct 12th. Any other news?

Aldgate will be very different with Turbo, Atkins and Woolard not being there but great chance for there gun Juniors to get a red hot crack and Callaghan will be a quality skipper.

Lachy coming back to SCIB is great for us, he played Juniors with us and plays footy at the club so makes sense. Round 1 should be fun against Kangy though.

Was surprised to see that Uraidla didn't step back into A Grade after winning the A2's last season. Onkas have nominated 3 teams, so some good growth from where they were a few years ago.

Draft fixtures had been released for the AEHCA, but now apparently might be changed. Something to do with the B grade nominations. 40 teams nominated all up, with Lenswood and Wistow adding a third senior team this season. Looks like status-quo at the other clubs.

Haven't heard much out of TVCA. All clubs have nominated an A's and B's but suspect a couple might battle to fill their second team without a headache or two along the way.

Good luck to your boys Batman…. But no too much luck!

The redcaps have 1 handy in this season, and working on another who will be a very, very handy player.
