Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Post by Mr Fuller »

Based on these changes I’m trying to work out what the absolute worst case scenario could be for a club. From what I can gather it would be the loss of:

- one open age player (Aged over 21)
- two players from the Talent Development list (Aged under 21)
- An unlimited number of players who are U18, Father-Son or Next Generation Academy (access to U18 players will be for a maximum of four weeks only)

Is the Rookie Program player the same as the Talent Development List player? Or are they different? If different, that is potentially another eight players from the one club that could be taken.

What happens to these players if they Crows/Power have a healthy list with not a single injury such that they can’t fit them all into the team? Do they then go back and play for their SANFL team?

Does the SANFL clubs get ‘first rights of refusal’ if the Crows/Power nominate someone from the Talent Development List but the SANFL club views that player as crucial?

What happens at the AFL mid-season draft when the Crows/Power draft in players not currently on the list. Does that mean AFL Clubs would need to jettison some existing players on their squad back to their SANFL Club? Conversely, if they use the mid-season draft to draft an existing player on their list – such as an open age player – does that give the AFL clubs the right to then pinch a replacement player from other SANFL teams midseason to fill the gap?

This is a horrendous decision by the SANFL boffins who appear to have sold out the competition for an unspecified amount of development funding that the AFL have dangled in front of their noses. Basically each of the Crows and Power could pick, for instance, two of the best players in the competition for their needs in addition to the existing AFL talent on their lists.

Craig Burton on C7 trying to explain the sellout.

“We have gone further than we would have liked but sometimes you have to do that to get a result”

Yep. WAFDH.

Darren Chandler makes it worse.

“We have told both Port and Adelaide that we want them to be part of the SANFL after the current contract expires in 2028”.

Yep. WAFDH

So after getting what they want to the detriment of the 8 clubs, Adelaide and Port have both issued a statement.

“We still wish to leave”

What a complete and utter cockup.

What I need to know is, can the power and/or the crows select their 6 players each at the start of the season & they are stuck with them all year? Or can they replace them as they please, as long as they don't take over their at any one time allocated amount.

If as expected the AFL teams dominate from next season will Burton,Dewing & Edwards step aside for not only selling out their clubs but the rest of the competition as well.Their job was to look after their own clubs not suck up to Koch and his bullying tactics ,he now knows as soon as he sooks it about something else he will get his way again .I bet none of the 3 mentioned will front their boards, coaches, players and members to explain why they sold them out .

An explanation at a minimum would be appreciated.
It appears to be almost a bribe.

It almost feels like the sanfl sides are becoming the reserves sides to the afl reserves sides!

Just received this message from Greg Edwards.

An U21 player remains our player, so if they're not picked in the AFL team, they come back to us.
The overage player also comes back to us if not selected.
The AFL club can delist their top ups anytime up to June 30th,
They can't exchange players though as the SANFL players would be contracted well before then,
The SANFL player can't leave if contracted.

The very epitome of a clubman, someone who plays for you if the other team has too many.

Mark McKenzie. Luke Thompson. Those players worked out pretty well for us under the old system.

Edit: I stress, I am in agreement with the list changes, but not the AFL Reserves teams playing against the SANFL sides. Players playing SANFL for the opportunity to take their football further is a good thing. The SANFL's decision to want to keep the AFL Reserves side in the SANFL is not.

This is good. Perhaps they should/could go one step further and make it so these players who are still aligned with their SANFL club, can't play against them.

What they can't/won't say is why a club like the Power who have regularly played finals in the last decade including participating in two Grand Finals can have one bad season and bitch and moan about it and suddenly gain all these concessions.

Whereas a club such as Westies have mostly struggled the past 20 years and the SANFL act like that's ok. Perhaps Westies ought to threaten to leave the SANFL and join the WAFL or VFL and see what the SANFL will say.

That is an excellent point.

Port don’t give a faark where their reserves side finishes, they just want more exclusive access to players from SANFL clubs.

Of course, there’s not enough drafts to source players from already

:D
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

How much are Port & Crows allowed to spend on these top up players
SANFL clubs have to fit players within their salary cap, will Port & Crows be in a position to entice players by paying more than their SANFL club could afford?

"A salary cap will also apply to both AFL clubs, which is proportionate to SANFL Clubs and is in line with both the WAFL and VFL regulations."

Was it only 12 months ago that Port played in Elimination Final and the Port ruckman who was close to BOG at half time spent the second half on the bench in case he was needed for AFL final the following week
From memory Centrals went on to win that Elimination Final
and we are meant to create a system whereby Port & Crows have a better chance of reaching finals
As a South supporter, aaghh!!!

Why would Greg Edwards believe that this is the way to go?
Might be a drop in memberships after this, as it seems that a members opinion means nothing.
