it should be 1 week, all other penalties have been to harsh. AFL have changed rules/interpretations midseason before.
If somebody called Darcy Moore a straight man would they get 5 weeks too?

On the subject of fines and them not meaning enough to some players. I have always thought why arent they fined a set % of their salary? Even the ones they hand out like lollies, $1000 for a rookie listed player is alot different to $1000 for NWM. But even these $1000 fines are massive compared to the rest of society.

Maybe the AFL needs to dial it back more than we're expecting to make it more believable. 3 weeks says we're weak and doing it so he can potentially play in the GF. If they dial it back to 1 or 2 weeks that takes that narrative out of the equation and back to each case being judged on its merits, Probably brings the Rioli rule back to the fore though. I take it Rankine is not as intellectually challenged as Rioli so that probably rules that defence out.

Im no Crows fan but its time they stood up to the AFL and perhaps they are doing that behind the scenes. They havent been willing to upset the AFL since the Tippet saga


Of course the 'soft' tag would upset you more because im guessing you are a straight male whose very comfortable with that and not doubting that.

The issue isnt about us straight males being offended or not. I can't fathom how people cant understand that.

It's about describing ones sexuality in a way which makes them 'lesser' than other people, something most gay people have fought all their life even to a point it was illegal once upon a time. It's not about whether Rankine is gay or not, but if there are other players on that field they don't need to feel less because of their sexuality which is completely non football related.

Apparently a repeat offender going by the reports last night.
No sympathy.

Everyone well aware what you can and can’t say.

Think everyone agrees the AFL has double standards but still don’t see why Rankine had to use the word he did when he was obviously trying to insult the other player, hundred 100 words he could have chosen

Is there a handbook displaying which insults a player can use vs which ones put him/her in the naughty corner?

On another note, the AFL Integrity Unit was investigating the Rozee rumors, I wonder how that is going?

I presuming the **** is black and off course that is not ok and should definitely be punished.

We need to remember players have pushed the fact that the ground is their workplace... for any of us working in a setting with a strong HR team try and go into work today and either racially or sexually vilify a fellow work colleague. See how that goes down. Me and you would be out of a job, never mind 5 weeks of leave.

Players can't have it both ways............can't have all the pay rights ect of a standard workplace and then want to get out of vilification as 'heat of the moment'.

Huzzaaa!

Those still operating in 1986 have no appreciation that the AFL field is exactly that, a work place and most modern workplaces, particularly ones with procedures established around codes of practice simply don't accept anything but inclusive language and zero tolerance of breaches.

My HR manual I roll out to new employees has an emphasis on these policies repeated several times within.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Like any organization though it's about consistency and implementing those policies and adhering to them and the AFL is, as well noted within this thread, particularly poor at being consistent and instead picking and choosing when to enforce penalties. They don't help themselves at all.

100% agree. Unfortunately, they penalise with their own benefits/consequences at the forefront of mind, not the best interests in the game/society ect.

Don't say it and there is no issue, its quite simple.

For someone earning close to $1m pa and with the average wage now nearly half a mil, you sign up to abide by your employers standards. Don't like it? Don't sign up for it, everyone has choices.

Like anything, what's "normal"? Every work place differs so every work places conditions differ. The non-English speaking powder coaters I deal with have a different "normal" to the Tier One contractors and construction directors I deal with. They all have their own set of challenges.

If a player calls another player a f....t, does the punishment increase if they are gay?

So because the game is physical that means 'words' like racism and sexuality should be looked at different.

I would almost argue they have an outlet in their workplace for aggression compare that to a heated high level office discussion worth millions and it doesn't go one persons way, there only outlet is the words they use. Thousands of time i would love to be able to just tackle a customer or fellow worker. Instead i have to have a well disciplined, though out conversation being careful with the words i use.
