1984 State Game - SA v WA

Postby westozfalcon » Wed Mar 26, 2008 6:01 pm

I was reading a WA footy history book the other day and in it there was brief reference to the above game which WA won by a point in Adelaide. I was too young to remember the match but from what I read there were a couple of controversial umpiring decisions which SA supporters thought cost the Croweaters victory and had them calling for neutral umpires in future state games (so presumably it was the WA umpire they had issue with!!). One was Brad Hardie tackling Bruce Lindsay and getting a holding the ball decision in his favour and another was Rob Wiley getting a free kick at the end which gave the Sandgropers victory by a point.

The final score was SA 14.13 v WA 14.14.

Does anyone have any recollections or facts on this game?

Best
WA: Hardie Malaxos Daniels Wiley Langsford Rance

SA: Aish 3 Kernahan 3 Roberts 2 Naley 2 Bradley McGuinness Motley Marshall

I didn't see this game, so all I really remember was Mike Ball's controversial umpiring near the end of the game.

Remember the game to a fair degree. As AH listed, the WA umpire was Mike Ball and the last decision you mentioned was, I believe, paid by him. SA had their chances to take it, but a combination of a couple of umpiring decisions and a couple of misses at critical times just cost them. Was a pretty big year for state footy - IIRC, it was the year Kernahan kicked 10 and Motley took the screamer against Victoria that brought the house down. Was sitting about 8 rows back from that grab and remember it as clear as if it was yesterday. A near perfect high mark from a young bloke about to enter a special time of his career.

I remember the game quite well. In fact, I still recall the decision, about 15 - 20m out directly in front against Lindsay. It still ranks among the top 3 worst decisions I've ever seen.

I see Mike Ball most weeks. He says he is regularly reminded of that game once people make the association
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

That's what I remember. I reckon he later claimed that he did hear the siren but the ball was already in flight when he signalled time off and thus was still able to score. Tardy b@stard cost SA the win...

I reckon this is also the game where, during the half time break, some bloke jumped the fence on the outer wing and ran full tilt towards the southern goal with a ball in hand. He let fly with a punt from the pocket and split the centre, pumping his fists in the air before jumping back over the fence at the southern end. I saw the coppers talking with him after, but I don't reckon they chucked him out.

Was at the game ... the holding the ball decision against Bruce Lindsay was comfortably the worst I've ever seen.

Ball bounces up into his arms and falls straight out again as he is tackled ... possession was never taken ... Ball blows for holding the ball 3/10ths of a nano-second after ball spills from Lindsay.

It sticks in my mind more than the fact than the siren had gone before Wiley kicked the winning point.

Lucky to get off the ground in one piece, he was.

Big year for SA, to go with the four-point loss to the Vics when Kernas kicked 10.

I was at that game against WA, but dont remember much. I do remember the state game where S Kernahan kicked 10.1 and we lost. If he had kicked 11.0 we would have won....

What was the game we 'won' because Victoria did something wrong with their interchanges?

We got revenge the following year when we thrashed WA at Subiaco with arguably our greatest SOO side ever (at least while it was made up of mostly SANFL based players)

Blighty played full forward IIRC
