Did SOO rules apply for WA v SA state matches back then? I have a funny idea that WA and SA only ever met 2 or 3 times under SOO rules, and this was only ever during carnivals. Am happy to be told I'm wrong though (spelly?)

I think you'd be right there, looking at that 84 selected team at least, there weren't any VFL based SA players in the side.

85 must have been Blight's year back at Woodville.

I reckon around 86/87/88 era would have been nearly our greatest SOO sides ever. We won a couple around that time, those mid week night games were probably the greatest games i've ever been to.

It was his BEST year back at Woodville. He came back in 83 and retired at the end of 85.

Good point. I think you're right that SOO didn't apply to SA-WA games back then - making that 85 SA side one of the greatest non-SOO teams then.

1986 was when the cream of SANFL talent started heading East leading into the first VFL draft (at the end of the 86 season IIRC).

I agree with GWW those late 80s SOO sides were brilliant once the likes of Kernas, Platten & co had some experience playing in the VFL

It was around this time that I learnt who Blight was, I remember a headline in the Footy Times which said something like "Father Time" or something like that....

Not until 1993 - the three meetings under SOO rules were in 1993, 1996 and 1998.

The match involving Victoria playing with one more interchange than they should have was in 1985:

Victoria 2.3 6.8 13.10 20.13 (133)
South Aust. 2.4 5.4 8.7 11.10 (76)
Football Park, 44287

and the SA/WA meeting in 1985:
South Aust. 7.4 13.8 21.13 30.18 (198)
West Aust. 3.5 7.8 12.12 16.15 (111)
Subiaco, 25831

Spelly, do you have any info on how many goals Blight kicked in that 85 game v WA in Perth?

Also, does anyone know if SA were officially awarded the 85 game v Vic due to the interchange error? I vaguely recall that but cant remember exactly what happened as a result.

Blight kicked 6 goals, Kernahan booted 7.

Yes, SA were officially awarded the match by the NFL executive and finance committee who met after the match in Perth and ruled that Victoria forfeit the game on the grounds they deliberately and knowingly breached the rules by fielding 22 players.

No, I think it was Mariah Carey ...

Pretty sure Robert Wiley kicked the winning point ... We were crucified to the max by Ball, but truth be told we had our chances to win it regardless ... Rocky Roberts poor SOO kicking for goal that year continued ...

Not only did we win the game because of the extra interchange player...

We also won the National Championship for the first time since 1911.

A somewhat hollow 'win'...

Super would have to be the most one of the most underrated footballers by the general football public and some sections of the media but if any of you ever get the chance to ask those that played with or against him where he stands in their estimations do so and I'm of the belief they are the best judges. I'm bemused at the reference to Graham Cornes when people reflect on the 73 Grand Final and no doubt his goal to put them in front has gone down in folklore however Carey kicked 7 goals that day from CHF no less.

Look I'm not the biased to know that there are ruckmen in teh Australian Football HOF that deserve to be in there ahead of him.....Nicholls, Farmer, Simon Madden etc

But how the numb nut from the VFA/VFL got in last year when he played 200 less games played in one premiership compared to three and like super made one All Australian side?????

The only thing that bloke did that Supe didn't was coach and even then his playing/coaching tally is still a minimum of 100 gams less than Super.

I am dying to know how that wood-duck (comapred to Super) got in ahead of Peter Carey????
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I was referring to Ken Farmer being in Rucci's and Cornes' list and you prob knew that Tassie, but as for your argument, i guess it probably has more to do with the AFL feeling that they have to recognise the VFA with a token, and at the same time the governing body AKA the AFL probably thought they had recognised enough SANFL footballers, Robran etc.

D'oh I was thinking Ruckman so i thought you meant "Polly" Farmer, not Ken Farmer.....

Instant banning for 7 days for me, for putting a WAFL/VFL player over one of the SANFL greats....
