Brian Rundle and Jim Wright deserve some credit

Postby spell_check » Sun May 25, 2008 10:55 pm

The records that have been maintained over the years lists Paul Caust as the 1955 Leading Goalkicker and Rex Johns as the 1958 Leading Goalkicker.

However if retrospective Ken Farmer Medals were awarded, those years would be awarded to Brian Rundle and Jim Wright, respectively.

At the end of the 1955 minor round season, Rundle lead Caust 56 goals to 52. But as Glenelg missed the 1955 finals, Caust kicked 5 goals in that major round series to overtake him by one goal.
And in the 1958 minor round season, Wright led the goalkicking with only 49 goals. Johns advanced past Wright after the Preliminary with 3.8 and 4.1 (Wright in West's successful 2nd Semi had managed just 0.4). Heading into the Grand Final Johns was clear by two goals, with the gap extending to three (he kicked 4.1 to Wright's 3.1).

Although, Johns had taken just 11 games to get to 55 goals, to Wright with 20 matches for his 52 goals. Johns had missed 10 matches during the season, including Rounds 8 to 16 with a leg injury.

What about Norwood's Ian Brewer in 1966? Top the goalkicking in the minor round with 76 and Port's Eric Freeman on 75, but Freeman booted 6 goals in the finals to take his tally to 81.

The 2nd round I don't think Freeman played - do you know if this is correct?

I don't KNOW it to be correct, but I do know he missed 1 game, so you are probably correct.

Yeah, in Round 3 he only kicked three behinds, so that would be the match he did not play.
