Well deserved rest next week
I only saw half of today's game but they are a very good side. I hope they're planning beyond 09 because many a side has earned promotion only to find life in Div1 and a subsequent failure (not that I think Modbury will) has been more of bad legacy than something to write home about. Take Port Districts, from memory they were almost undefeated in 07 any many pundits (Hafey) predicted a solid representation in 08 with a finals appearance and apart from a couple of wins are really only going to be saved by ROCS, Broadview and Seaton's poor showing so far. After seeing today's game I'm actually going to agree for the first time with No-Mercy that the difference between Div 2 and Div1 is infinitely enormous so Modbury would want to be very well prepared. When you think about it the only side to capitalize on promotion in the last 5 or 6 years is ROCS. The rest have had yoyo spells in Div2/Div1 which must drive blokes responsible for recruiting crazy.

That said maybe Modbury should be concerned that the mid-season break might actually give sides time to regroup and catch up in the last half.

The reason I only saw half of that game is had a little look at the 1st half of the SHOC v Athelstone game and if I hadn't heard what I'm about to tell you I wouldn't have believed it. If Jack Juniper hadn't of kicked five goals in the first quarter he certainly kicked 4 and at qtr time I wandered over to hear Stephen Carr address his players and he said something to the tune of "If Juniper isn't off the ground by half time with a broken nose I'll be really pissed off". Carr was as a player a sniper at best who could also play a bit but if the club coach is going to carry on like that it's not a wonder the Athelstone Football Club carry on like a bunch of ferrals as both players and spectators. Had a look at the SAAFL website and Athelstone have had the most up before the tribunal than any other Div1 or Div 2 club.

Keep up the good work Stephen, you're a true inspiration.

Correct a massive jump between the divs.
Did Carr really say that? Didnt think Athelstone were one of those sides. Stand corrected.

If that is the case the SAAFL should investigate and a penalty should be handed down.... did Juniper receive the treatment ordered by Athelstones "so called" coach? Blu can you comment?

If you know Carry as a coach (which you don't), if he did say that, it would have been in the context that we need to shut the guy down (not that I think it was the best choice of words to deliver a message, and I didn't here it so can't comment exactly). He kicked 2 goals after half time and wasn't required to leave the field with a broken nose or anything else broken for that matter.

To call us ferral because we have had 3 guys attend the tribunal, 2 of them being found NOT GUILTY is drawing a bit of a long bow to intimate that we are the biggest bunch of thugs in Div 1/Div 2 footy.

Uni were good and missing a few players i believe. matched intensity with Modbury who were flat in the first quarter. some key targets and quick legs. Better team than Edwardstown i rekon

Firstly let me say in response to the couple who have replied to my original post, I never called Athelstone thugs.

As a game it was pretty good looking at it objectively but clearly Carr was a little unhappy. I reckon SHOC might be the smokey though, I've seen them 3 times now and they're better every time.

I said couple of weeks ago PNU were better than their then win-loss record suggested and I still reckon they will claim a few more fancied scalps before the season ends.

Uni probably need a few cards to fall their way and the game against PHOS has turned out to be crucial after the break. Their best is good enough but getting their players on the park seems to be the challenge. Someone from the inner sanctum tells me they've already used 36 players in the A grade which makes it pretty hard to get some momentum.

They were like that last year in Div2, i rated them right up there with Pt Dist, Seaton & Modbury yet they went missing at the most important time of the year.

Nah, the Lions will be on parade. I might even kick straight for the first time this year.

I rate SHOC's just below MOdbury - the way I see it (not including us or PNU for obvious reasons)

MOdbury
SHOCs, PHOS and Towns
Uni and Raggies

Pembroke
Scotch

BTW, the red card against the SMOSH player on the weekend was crap. He rand through a guy trying to shepard him. The guy was standing still, and Tommy was running at full pace. Momentum somehow got written down as striking. What the hell.

No DIsrepect to the old fella with beard and Bad eye. Hes the best Amateur league umpire going around IMO. Others agree/disagree?

I hear he likes to punt and always has one each way.

The good thing about the div 2 comp as against the Div 1 comp is you can't pick a winner with the same confidence as you can in Div 1 which makes for a good read on Sunday Morning and certainly doesn't mean any one club at the top of the ladder will definatley beat a side at the other end of the ladder on any given day so my tip on PNU giving it to you blokes was more a guess than anything else.

Nah fair call mate, not like we've been impressive recently.

Hopefully a few more players back after the break.

I only caught the last 5 mins of the game, but was one of the most exciting finishes to a game for a PNU supporter. The boys were trailing by close to 3 goals with only a few minutes to play got back within 3 points and Billy Kolias marked about 30 out from goal, put it through to take the lead leaving enough time for the ball to be thrown up in the middle and Edwardstown were beaten by the siren. Plenty of celebrating by the PNU boys which seemed to kick on into the night with an entertaining club function. Would have been quite shattering for Edwardstown, although to their credit they seemed to take it very well.
