McKellar, Blight, Huppatz. All State players, all went to Findon High. If they didn't play for Woodville, I dare say they would have played for Torrens.

I am pretty sure they interviewed Huppatz or Mckellar on where are they now one wednesday night in the last month.Pretty sure they said they would have gone to torrens if there was no woodville.And they also said they would have had more success if the team had more experianced players.

To back up my statement I sit in the stands near an old Woodville player from the 1940's and his brother went on and played for Torrens after starting at woodville .

It would have been a hard situation re zones back in my day I lived in the old Woodville council area and was zoned to west torrens.My high school on the other side of the torrens from where I lived was in the west adelaide footy zone pretty sure Jon the club CEO went there .I tried to play for Flinders Park in the woodville area and ended my playing days at Lockleys which back in the day played in the Glenelg south association .
Lucky for me I am a better fisherman than footy player

Actually to be fair IIRC it seemed to start turning up at away games in 81 or 82 but it certainly didn't in the mid-late 70's.

Correct. It also fully adorns the outer wing in the 1969 DVD against Sturt.

I believe Torrens wasn't bringing in the money and Woodville didn't have the supporters, which is probably why both clubs had to merge. I can understand why the players were against the merger as it meant that they might not be playing at the highest level in the state.

I was told something along the same lines except Torrens had better players .But that was not really the case IMHO.

I would have thought that from 1964 to 1990, Woodville made the finals 3 times and West Torrens made it only 4 times whould have had something to do with it. Prior to Woodville entering the competition, West Torrens were regular finals participants since WW2. Clearly the area couldn't sustain both clubs.

Looking at the number of Port flags from say '54 to '64, then from '64 -74 - it seemed to have worked. Pity it appeared to also weaken both Torrens & West.

I started with the Peckers in '74 - funny, it's only recently I realise I was supporting a club only 10 years old - but back then, Woodville had been around my entire football following life

Not really. Port Adelaide still played in 7 Grand Finals from 1964 to 1974, but only won one of them due mainly to a brilliant Sturt team at the time.

West Adelaide were weakened in 1964 mainly due to an exodus of top players to either the VFL, or to coach other clubs.

West Torrens was the club who suffered most, there's no doubt about it IMHO.

At some stage West Torrens turned from a footy club into just a social club .

North also lost a far whack of territory. In fact at one stage Prospect Road was the border of the North/Woodville zone! Losing Kilburn players was no doubt out biggest loss.

I always laugh when fellow Port supporters talk about the 'lean years' between 1966-1976.

Only missed the finals once (1969) and made six grand finals!

If only the pickings were that slim now...
