Actually to be fair IIRC it seemed to start turning up at away games in 81 or 82 but it certainly didn't in the mid-late 70's.

Not really. Port Adelaide still played in 7 Grand Finals from 1964 to 1974, but only won one of them due mainly to a brilliant Sturt team at the time.
West Adelaide were weakened in 1964 mainly due to an exodus of top players to either the VFL, or to coach other clubs.
West Torrens was the club who suffered most, there's no doubt about it IMHO.
