1982 SANFL Preliminary Final - 150 Great Moments

Postby Mr66 » Thu Jul 17, 2008 10:30 pm

Melbourne's Herald-Sun is running a series called 'Australian Football - 150 Moments' and this game made No.113.

'The 1982 Preliminary Final between Port Adelaide and Glenelg was one of the most controversial games in SANFL history, and the culmination of 20 years of bad blood between the two bitter rivals.
Port tough nut David Granger, better known as 'Grave Danger', started on the bench, but was thrown into the game late in the second quarter and was almost immediately reported for striking Glenelg great Graham Cornes.
The carnage, which saw Granger suspended for eight games, continued after half time with Glenelg defender Stephen Barratt suffering a broken leg in a "collision" with Granger. Another Bays player, Peter Maynard, had to leave the field with a bleeding eardrum.
Glenelg won by a point and Granger, playing what turned out to be his last SANFL game, had to escorted from the field by police.
The Advertiser's chief football writer Michelangelo Rucci, who was covering opposition stats in the Port Adelaide coach's box on the day, recalled: "The second half, against the backdrop of this deadpan, ominous grey sky, was brutal and too tense to ever recount in words".

I for one am amazed that that blinkered Victorian toilet paper saw fit to mention a game which happened outside of Victoria.

I would be interested to see exactly how many non-Vic moments make the list, and in what positions. State matches too.

I think Kernahan's 10 goal effort in 1984(?) has got a guernsey.

I went to Melbourne that weekend to watch the VFL Grand Final. On the way back, we watched the SANFL Preliminary Final on television at the Tullamarine Airport, so the Vics must have had some interest in it. There was a large group of us and we held up the plane for nearly half an hour so we could see the end of the game :)

when they did my piece a few weeks ago the journalist dion hayman told me he would try & find a copy even though ch 7 had the tv in that particular year, i haven't heard anything but he did say it would be very difficult to locate

i've seen the game once (live) & 'highlights' every now & then as we all have but the game no but we didn't ever see the 49.23 to 11.13 against central until a couple of years ago so i still hold hope :prayer: :prayer: :prayer:

It was a very tiny article. Blink and you missed it.

I rang the station once looking for a copy of the Wheel Of Fortune episode I was on, and they said you could purchase copies of their programs provided you have the date it aired ... Should be pretty easy to get the date of that game mate, for some reason a figure of around $120 came to mind.

Otherwise Im happy to lend my copy of the Way It Was 82 if it helps.

Bayman IIRC it was channel 7, which then became 10, but then went back to 7 again.

CP, do you mean the SANFL broadcaster went from ch 7 to 10 to 7, or are you referring to the swapping of the call signs. I only knew about SAS swapping with ADS in 87, after SAS was initially founded as ch 10 in 1965.

SAS10 went to SAS7 in 1987. ADS7 switched to ADS10.
