South Australia vs Queensland at Footy Park in 1980

Postby spell_check » Sat May 02, 2009 10:52 pm

I'm not sure if I have any more details than the scores:

South Aust. 6.9 12.19 24.28 30.39 (219)
Queensland 0.1 1.1 2.2 3.3 (21)

I was wondering if anyone on here went to this match? Does anyone know the crowd figure for this game, which was played on the 19th of May?

Spelly, did Dunstall play in that?
Or too young?
Anyone notable?

First time I've seen the qtr by qtr scores in this game.
Wonder if there was a cross wind during the match?

Huge 3rd qtr, very inaccurate 2nd and 4th qtrs: 6.10 and 6.11.
Goal kickers for the match would be interesting.

That's all I can find on that match so far, I may have jotted them down somewhere in one of my books. Dunstall would have only been about 15 or 16 back then, DW.

I do have scorers from the previous years meeting at the Gabba:

South Aust. 8.1 19.5 30.8 35.12 (222)
Queensland 0.4 3.8 5.12 12.17 (89)
Gabba, 5000

S.A: Evans 7.4, Hodgeman 7.2, Jackman 5.1, Hateley 4.1, Maylin 4.0, Craig 2.0, Bennett, Meuret, Mobbs 1.1, Sewer, Cahill, Stringer 1.0, Rushed 0.1.
Qld: Maddison 5.2, Shaw 2.3, P.Taylor, Newton 2.0, Stackpoole 1.1, Blackford, Allen 0.2, Stump, L.Taylor, Toye, Gillespie, Ives 0.1, Rushed 0.2.

Don't quite know why i was there but I was there. I don't know why we played Queensland at the time but I know it was a pretty ordinary game with SA coasting throughout the match. I recall Davies kicking a bag but I can't remember much else. I was 9 1/2 at the time. Can only remember being at the game, and sitting on the outer wing. Can't remember the crowd numbers either but from memory it was a light sprinkling of supporters. In this day and age, and with my memory being as it was, it was most probably 15000.

I had the Budget from the game somewhere but can't find it (have recently had a cleanout and checked for collectors items such as that one).

I think so, maroon, with two white stripes (like Centrals mid 80's) down the left hand side. Maroon shorts. Could be wrong.

It's the first time I've even thought about the game since 1980!

I'm pretty sure we wore the state guernsey that I bought shortly after. The one with a white, blue, red and yellow panel on the front, red back, yellow number.

Dad has the Budget from the match played versus the VFA that year (and this was the last time SA played the VFA until its' successor in the VFL). SA played some odd matches in that year.

Speaking of collectors items, I reckon that guernsey (either of them) would be sought after!

I got free tickets, as did most of the kids at my school.

My old man simply laughed when I suggested that we go, saying that it would be a waste of time. As did most of the dads of the kids at my school.

I've thought about parting with the SA version, but would like to frame it and keep it. It'd be worth something.....hopefully?

The Queensland player Maddison who kicked goals (Spelly says 5, but it was 6), is none other than Gary "Spog" Maddison who played 13 games at CHF for Norwood 1977-78.

Would have played a lot more league at Norwood but he got a business opportunity up north where he made a fortune with computers. He also booted 2 or the 3 goals in the second Queensland game.

Interesting that Phil Maylin played in this match - he was at Carlton in 1980. Were there any other VFL players in the SA side?

No, that match with the scorers in it was in 1979. I don't have any other details on the 1980 match.

SA must have played 2 state game that year at Footy Park, i don't think i went to the Qld game, but remember the SA v WA game at Footy Park quite well although i was only 8. I recall we won that by about 14 or 15 goals. I seem to remember a melee and Peter Jonas being involved in some type of comical incident.

Do you have details of that game spell_check?

Actually, SA played in 5 State matches that year, the WA match was the 2nd of them:

14/6/1980:
S.A 5.8 7.12 16.17 21.19 (145)
W.A 1.0 3.6 6.7 9.10 (64)
Football Park, 28595

5/7/1980:
S.A 3.5 9.11 15.16 19.21 (135)
VFA 1.5 5.10 11.13 15.15 (105)
Football Park, 9468

Then after the season was played, a State of Origin carnival was played:

11/10/1980:
S.A 4.6 9.12 15.13 22.20 (152)
Tas 0.8 2.9 4.12 8.13 (61)
Football Park, 10666

13/10/1980:
Vic 5.5 6.9 9.11 15.12 (102)
S.A 1.2 6.5 10.7 12.13 (85)
Football Park, 17579

I have all the budgets for the 1980 state games except the one against QLD

but out of interest, the curtain raiser for the game against the VFA was Secondary Schools v Independant Schools
some names of interest for Secondary Schools were Steven Kernahan (capt), Clayton Lamb, Craig Bradley, Peter Reid, Chris McDermott, Greg Whittlesea
Independant Schools were Stephen Trigg (capt), William Hurn, Matthew Campbell

unfortunately I dont know the result

I have a copy of the Budget that I purchased on ebay a few years ago. Scoresd have been filled in along with goalscorers. had a quick look at it this morning. It also includes an interview with Walter Scott. I'll type out the team for SA tomorrow morning as well as goalscorers

I went to the game - I remember getting frustrated with SA kicking so many points (11 in the last qtr) to kill any chance of kicking 40 goals - I am still waiting to see a side kick 40 goals in a game - and this was the game that it should have happened for me. I was also annoyed that Qld's 3rd goal came in the last minute of the match to reduce the winning margin to under 200 pts. It was Trevor Hill's 1st match for SA and he was named as SA's best player. The match was played on a holiday Monday - the SA players had played for their clubs on the Saturday just 2 days earlier and really this match on the Monday was just a training drill for them. I always thought the value of SA playing these games against QLD was that it gave the SA players a chance to play together before taking on the stronger states - after they thrashed QLD in 1980, they went on to beat WA,VFA,TAS and give VIC a close contest. In 1979 they thrashed QLD in Bris and a few weeks later beat WA in Perth for the 1st time in 17 years. SA Youth 17.17 def NSW 7.13 in a curtain raiser to the 1980 QLD game. Best for SA Youth were Greg Phillips (can't imagine him ever being young - thought he was born old), Robert Magarey, Mark Hewett (4 goals), Greg McAdam & Mark Naley.
