Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

what do you miss at the grounds or surroundsfrom yesteryear

Postby bayman » Tue Jul 14, 2009 12:18 am

i got to say as a kid i loved walking across brighton road at half time & getting 50c worth of minimum chips from the fish shop that used to be there

more recently the 'change of hands' at the norwood bbq (to my taste buds) has gone from the best to the worst bbq at the league grounds

The 'pasty man' with his stand at the gate and the end of the game ... used to be at most grounds and even setup at Footy Park in the early Crows years

The best pasties we ever had were from the man at Alberton, from the station end when you left, I remember the taste more than the floggings we got every time we played there
I wish my remembering was as good as my forgetting

+1

At the Bay, the banner on the fence (what is now Snouts Hill) went on forever ... I'm sure Bayman will remember but something like the The Terrific Tenacious Terrifying Tigers etc, etc

I sorta miss "Panther Power, Panther Power" clap, clap, clap, when we kicked a goal, coming from the loud speakers at Adelaide Oval

proper mini league not the crap they have now (or nothing)

genuine passion and aggression (in the crowd not on the ground).

I reckon if we ever have a retro/heritage round, they should get the score board attendants to put the race results up :D

I was only a kid when they used to do that, did anyone punters ever use them??

Duffel Coats with so much stuff on them that you couldn't actually see the coat fabric....

* this probably doesn't apply to the Port Maggies cheer squad who still have and wear the Duffel's.....

I always thought that was for the benefit of certain players. Forget who, but I heard of one or two players who would take to the field with a list of their bets stuffed down a sock for easy reference 8)

They still do that at Alberton do they not? Bloody Unley doesn't even put up the around-the-grounds scores these days

Some a little off topic and not in any particular order:
A Budget you could stick in your back pocket.
Red behind posts.
The best players in the state playing in the SANFL.
Woodville and West Torrens (4-6 wins a year).
South playing at Adelaide Oval.
Rod McLeod and Brian Lees.
Ressies on TV.
The Big Replay.
Ian Day.

Previous week's mini league game on tv. Always desperate to find out that if you actually got to be in the mini league, would you then actually be on tv.

Always remember Gerry Harrison calling his son Brett (my age) in a mini league game. Thought he was going to burst through the tv with pride and Daisy saying 'must be wonderful for you Gerry to see your son out there in a Norwood guernsey and dream of what may be'. Got very emotional for a game between 11 year olds that went for nine minutes. As a completely random point, Brett was a very good swimmer but no idea what happened to him, as haven't seen him since we were about 13. Huge crush on his sister Kelly in primary school.
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.
