I always loved, before a couple of **** ruined it for everyone, being able to get super close at 1/4 and 3/4 time breaks. As a kid always made my way to the gate with a minute or two left in the quarter to be able to get up close and hear what Jack had to say. I reckon it used to rev up the teams even more because if they werent playing well, theyd know about it. The roars of support when Jack would say something inspiring. Now you cant hear anything so I rarely go out on the ground anymore, which is a pity.

The pastie man...legend. Does he still have pies as well? His pies were godly, miles above any other meat pie ive ever had. I used to go to the races with my dad when I was a kid in the summer and a pie on the way out was always a must.

Big double headers at Footy Park. The Sturt v Port 1 point game is the 2nd game I can remember going to (even though I went to every game that year, its the first one I can remember being at) and the crowd.

Miss Alberton pre-Alan Scott centre.

I used to be lucky enough to sit in the scorers box in the late 70's, where I used to be mates with the scorers son. Back then it was "tick for kick, cross for handball" and the teams were documented on an A4 paper with players safely put into boxes, knowing full well they wouldn't stray far!

And Thebby, that was a great ground to go and watch footy, my favourite of all.

I also remember one day playing mini league for Port (errchhh) against Sturt at Alberton. Part way through the second quarter, while we were getting ready, the Port trainer came into the rooms. Another trainer said "how are we going" and the first trainer said "we're getting smashed". I jumped up and said "woo hoo" or thereabouts.... full with Port kit on. It was one of those moments where everyone was silent, and everyone looked at me. Being 12/13, i was pretty intimidated, but by christ did we give the Pies a flogging that day (gold it was!!!).

The mini league replays on Sunday morning, The Big Replay with Mike Coward. Peter Marker, Ian Day, they were great times.

Kids going out after the final siren with autograph books. I don't see this nowadays and wonder why it died out, it was always one of the highlights of the day for me, rushing out to your favorite player(s) and getting them to sign the precious pages. Many a page of mine has the mud smudge from the day on it. Only ever got knocked back once in all those years, but will assume James Pyke was having a bad day :)

Yes, very strange. As someone who knows James very well, I'm surprised he would have knocked back an autograph request. Although he can appear austere, he's a pretty good bloke.

I used to walk off with one of the players and wander into the changerooms where I would get all the autographs I wanted. It used to annoy dad because he had to wait for me to come out :)

What I miss most about football at Norwood Oval is looking up at the scoreboard at the end of a game and seeing more goals and behinds along side Norwood's name, rather than the opposition.

The 2nds on TV.

I could see my mates kicking a footy over the mounds of alberton oval,

jump on my bike and ride to alberton, get in for free,

and pretend we were playing SANFL for keeps.

Get into the Port rooms and actually talk to the coach, and Umps.

Those were the days.

Never had any fear of my bike being nicked.

Ah innocent youth.....

Getting home and being scalded for bothering such an important man, The Coach of Port.

He was always so nice to us but my Dad didn't understand...SANFL

The year was probably 1967?
Smile :)

It's only Money $$$ :)

What is happening to our SANFL guys...

When Footy Park had no seats, no corporate boxes, a few standing rails, no roof on the concourse, the old scoreboard we still have at suburban grounds, no sponsors name and no VFL (AFL).

Main game that day was North v Central. I remember rocking up during the 'reserves' game that day just in time to see 'that' elbow. ;)

What do you miss at the grounds or surrounds from yesteryear?

Surprised no-one has admitted going to Lennies or Sams, but we've had one reference to the Bay Disco ... c'mon, time to come out of the closet.

Okay - I miss the stories my uncle, who used to be the DJ at Sam's, would tell me about his nights working there.

I went to Sams a lot. You could actually write a book about the things that happened up there, but I'll relate one story.

It involves a player from other club whose name I won't divulge in case he may read this forum, but he was a big name in footy for two clubs and played state football. He rolled up at the bar downstairs and we decided to head up to Sams. I was unaware at the time that not only had this player been banned from several other SANFL clubs, he'd been banned from his own, and that is why he was at Norwood that evening.

We went upstairs where John Wynne was at the door and he didn't want this player to come in. Not knowing any better, I told Wynney that I would vouch for the player's behaviour, thinking "how bad could he be anyway"? Reluctantly, Wynney let him in.

Within 15 minutes of being there, this player had made indecent proposals to just about every female he could get to, received several slaps across the face and had two drinks thrown at him.

The bouncers tossed him out, and Wynney wouldn't speak with me for the rest of the night :)
