Re: Whyalla Football League
Would have to agree Bluey.
They pushed the Roos in the wet although late goals made that one look a bit closer.
But to get rolled by a resurgent Weeroona Bay really puts them about fifth best side in the league at the moment IMO.
Mind you, the Bays can just turn it on sometimes, Anthony Malcolm is a very handy player.

Nielsen might not play this weekend in the clash with West.

Re: Whyalla Football League
They rarely have their strongest side willing to play. Some quality amongst that lot with Fiebig, Grund, Baker and Huish but I can't imagine they had their "best" team on the park. Mind you, SGL might not have either. The game looks close until 3qtr time though.

I like this quote from Spider Saunders regarding their Mortlock turnout:
Spider Saunders wrote:Whyalla has to get its act together and take its best team possible to future shields or we will continue to be the laughing stock of the Eyre Peninsula.

Re: Whyalla Football League
Are West Whyalla that far in front of the field after giving 2nd placed Roopena a bath on the weekend? Westies may avenge last years GF, just not against the team they would want to.

Re: Whyalla Football League
Finals are a different kettle of fish and who knows who Roopena may have had out?
I think West have a great young squad and a great blend of youth and experience, they will take some beating, but it will only be one team who have the cattle to do so.
Mind you, such mid-season results mean nothing if history tells us anything.
Round 11 - July 7, 2007
Roopena 15.12 (102) d Central Whyalla 9.7 (61)
GRAND FINAL AT BENNETT OVAL on September 22, 2007
Central Whyalla 11.11 (77) Roopena 8.9 (57)

Re: Whyalla Football League
I see Nick Prokapek returned for North Whyalla on the weekend kicking 8 goals. I think we will find out if North are going to be a serious finals contender this week when they battle West for the Robran/Mcinerney shield. Expect to see a fiery match as these 2 sides really hate each other!

Re: Whyalla Football League
G'day IK. Anthony Manfield still is a dedicated Westy, Matty on the other hand may have had some sort of falling out with Westies, I think they may have not offered what they should have for him to come back. Or it was something to do with playing with his brother that fell through.
While playing with South Clare and living in Whyalla, Matt trained with Roopena and stayed there after.
Southies have a great talent pool to work with, and haing coached some of their junior players who were at Roopena in the past, they seem to have a good future.
That said, they lost Josh Scharenberg, possibly their most promising youngster, to the SGL a few years ago.
I can't see them winning a premiership in the next two seasons, give them three years and how they retain and nurse their juniors through to senior level to see if they can realistically challenge for the flag.

Was Saturday's match the loss Westies 'Had to have' before the finals? Or is there something more sinister there?

I'm not following you FW, but I reckon Prokopec's return would have bolstered North, given they're somewhat of a one-man show.
No doubting West are the better team, but goes to show they're not indestructible.

The bays are like that. Pull an upset win out the bag every now and then. They do boast some talent, the Tigers, but you would think Westies must have some injuries to be losing to Weeroona Bay. Surely

Re: Whyalla Football League
Another upset for the Bays I see.
Can't believe they rolled Northies, although it's good to see them really challenging the top four sides and pushing for a top 4 spot.
Did I see right? Is Troy Taylor playing for the Bays?

What's going on at Westies?? They've got the staggers big time. Very similar to Cobdogla in the Riverland. Will they bounce back come major round??

In a word, yes. I'll put them down for a GF or prelim at least.
Roopena are a very good team, as are North.
Weeroona Bay should be finals bound also, and have played sensationally to earn their place.
Should be an open finals series.
West aren't like a Cobby, they had a very purple patch but overall are still a very young side. Was always going to be hard to sustain their early season form.
Can't explain what's happening at the Eagles

Westies or Centrals this week? Westies have had the wobbles as of late, but should have Centrals measure
