I'm not sure the massive growth area in Aldinga would be a market the SFL would be willing to give away

Once again, an excellent comment LGIL. However they have. Add that to the other outer clubs formerly in the SFL..Kangarilla, Meadows, McLaren X2 and Willunga...all growth areas.

If it was ever theirs to give away, I'd say they've already handed it to the GSFL. :?

So it looks all okay for the sharks by the sounds of things. If not and they have to fill a team in the c grade it would give a good chance to look at moving the c grade comp to saturday. For me it would be a good move for the league and would assist some clubs that may be struggling with numbers to consitantly fill an a grade and b grade side. When you think about it it could become div 2.
I will try and explain my thinking.
Currently in the c grade comp we had
brighton
morphett vale
cove
happy valley
these are all strong young playered clubs with large numbers of juniors coming thru each year and I believe these clubs have lost numbers of players and find it dificult to fill the c grade team consitantly with regular players week in week out. BUT its not because of the lack of interest or player numbers its because young 20 plus year olds dont want to play footy on a sunday at lunch time. They have a social life on saturday nights which takes priority over the footy on a sunday(i can't blame them your only growing up once).
So move the c grade to saturday and clubs will benefit aswell as the sfl.
Other teams that I believe would be possibly in a position to join a saturday c grade would be noarlunga, flaggies, reynella, and if aldinga has to go to one side they can play on a saturday.
this may encourage the clubs that are struggling to fill 2 sides to look at joining it as well.Just a thought I had what do people think.

Also have been told that the towns will be filling a under 18 team this year can anyone confirm?

GTP

Sounds like you have been hanging out on Jetty Road with DTH sipping latte.

Saturday C grade. Where do they play? Where do we get umpires from. There are not enough umpires to go around now on a Saturday let alone finding more for C grade and consider loss of takings at A grade games when the C grade are playinging elswhere. How do we find extra trainers, as it is now most clubs trainers double up on a Saturday and Sunday. Maybe the SFL could program 14/16/C grade together on a Sunday with C grade starting at 2.00 to 2.30 pm rather than lunch time.

I just hope Aldinga can field a & B grade in June/July when the flu strikes and the defeats take a toll.

Good luck Sharks, hope you hang on

I hear that the league are bringing in the rushed behind rule from the afl, what are peoples thoughts on this. I think this will cause problems especially in the b grade with club umpires would not like to see a game decided on a free kick for a rushed behind.
I also think this may spell the end of the great Leon pegs Hanson, the best user of the rushed behind that the competition has ever seen.

Hahahahaaa!! =))

Hanson will be having a press conference this arvo in what will be an emotional retirement speech. Definitely the best exponent of the rushed behind in the history of the SFL. I'll miss his snaps for goal when deep in the pocket while playing in defence or casually walking through the goals while smiling at the forwards.

R.I.P. Larry Hanson you were cut down in your prime.

In all seriousness though i think this is an odd decision by the SFL and will open a real can of worms. Surely the umps have enough to worry about without introducing new rules that are very open to interpretation. Cant see the umps applying this rule consistently.

We played a Saturday C-Grade game against Brighton last season during one of the missing Junior slots - best numbers we had all year

If the c's played at the same ground as the a's and b's, the u/14's would have to roll up at 6:00 to play at 7:00.

One sugar and a copy of the Financial Review to read. Magnificent.

This is where you miss the point Vics. Many of our clubs are large organisations compared to some of the Amateur League clubs that field 3 or 4 senior teams and not much else. They cope with having Senior teams playing at different venues on a Saturday, and sometimes those venues could be 30 km apart. Taken that Trainers are one of the hardest things to find and some clubs are very lucky to have them doubling up on Sunday's but this is surely not ideal and more likely to burn a good trainer out within a couple of years. Somehow those Amateur League clubs manage to get trainers to cover all senior teams so why can't our clubs with some hard work.

Where do they play ? Every Saturday there are 7 grounds not being used and games can be structured into program gaps caused by clubs not having a full suite of teams which is what we did vs Christies last year as mentioned by LGIL. EV no-one is suggesting a 6 game Saturday with this concept.

GTP raises an interesting idea however I don't think it could ever happen. I think with more ovals getting playing standard lights (possibly even Brighton by 2011) then the C grade comp could be played over a combination of Friday nights, Saturday (possibly Saturday night straight after A grade) and the odd Sunday. This could also assist the umpire problem that you correctly point out.

How do MV and Reynella (when they fielded C Grade) handle the Sunday C grade when their Saturday teams play their big Sunday derbies twice a year.

First the "Primus Rule" in the ruck. Now the "Hanson Rule" in defence. Trying to umpire the superstars out of the game. What next? Shouldn't they try and make it easier for the umpies not harder.

I never said the sat c grade would have to play at the same ground. I think if you asked most of the trainers what would they like to be on a doing sunday they would say not strapping footballers. Im sure they would put in the work to find extra support if it allowed them to have sundays free. I look at it this way the c grade comp causes more issues for a footy club on a sunday that it would on a saturday. Say if morphett vale were playing cove in the a and b grade at morphett vale you then would have the c grade play at cove. Gives the chance for the club to open and take a little bit of coin. If you had it start at the A grade time it could be possible for a ump from an earlier game to umpire it. I believe you would attract more people to the c grade games over time aswell as giving supporters to watch footy at the home ground most week.
The c grade comp in my opinon is very tired and needs a big revamp. Some say get rid of it but its a grade thts needed to keep clubs attracting players but it needs to be on saturdays. Move it to saturday and clubs will benifit because Im sure that there would be a few players playing for amateur league clubs that are only playing for the lower side because its on a saturday. The sfl should have a serious look at this and go to the clubs that are involved in the c grade and ask for feed back and if its positive look at it.

LGIL sorry that I left you guys out I would think that you club would benefit alot from saturday c grade would I be correct?
SB how would noarlunga take to the Idea?

If the sfl doesnt want to explore the option to improve the comp standard maybe the clubs that are involved in the c grade get together and discuss it and go to the sfl like brighton and christies did last year and ask to prgramme igames for a saturday.

What do people from other clubs think?

Postby 85 WAS A GOOD YEAR » Thu Mar 11, 2010 7:08 pm

Flaggies have a C Grade Trainier who can't do Sat matches, so it is rare for double ups. But I see your point there, as it used to be me missing out on a weekend :)

However, generally it's extremely hard finding enough Trainers now while we have teams programmed at different ovals. eg 18s at Aldinga, 14s and 16s at M/Vale and A's & B's at Morphettville Park has happened to Flaggies more than once in the past few seasons.

At least one Level 1 trainer is required at the ground for your club. If a club can't supply their own, they have to find a Level 1 Trainer from another club willing to take responsibility for your team.

Yes when the Sunday derbys are held all clubs find it tough to find enough trainers to cover the C's as well, but having the C's play on a Saturday will just make it tougher every week.
