SANFL super team v WAFL super team 1991-2006

Concentrating on the post AFL/Crows era I thought it would be an interesting exercise and comparison to pit a SA team against a WA team on paper from the last 15 years.

I’ve named what I consider to be the best WA team from that era and I thought I’d get you guys to name your best SANFL line-up from the same period. The only criteria is that the players should have played at least 50 SANFL games in that period. I’m pretty certain all my WA players have achieved the 50-game mark in WA.

WA Team:-

B Scott Spalding (EF) Damien Condon (EF) Quenton Leach (Cl)

HB Paul Mifka (WP) Greg Jones (SD/WP/EP) Todd Curley (WP)

C Ian Dargie (S) Craig Treleven (EF) Neil Mildenhall (WP)

HF Leigh Willison (EP/EF) Jon Dorotich (SF) David Muir (Cl)

F Allistair Pickett (Peel/S) Jason Heatley (S) Paul Ridley (S/EP)

Ruck: Ryan Turnbull (Cl/EP) Jaxon Crabb (Cl) Craig Turley (WP)

Int Marty Atkins (SF), Brendan Hendrie (Cl), Stephen Bilcich (EF)

Coach: Gerard Neesham

What your saying is that a player can have some AFL experience. eg. H Skipworth could fit in this as he has played more then 50 games for the Eagles and has played some games for Adelaide.

Here's a few names to get the ball rolling:

G McIntosh
D Squire
B Atkinson
R MacGowan
J Cicolella
G Colville
N Chigwidden
B James
J Francou (yes, he's qualified)
S Hodges
D Mead
A Rogers
B Phillips
Gowans x2
B Chalmers
P Thomas
D Healy
N Steinberner
S Feast
B Backwell
A Osborn
A Harvey
S Schwerdt
P Sherwood
S Hall
S Carter
D Schell
M Naley (does he qualify?)
S Lee

There are probably some other fringe AFL players who just played 50. I checked some like Matthew Bode, Rod Jameson, Matthew Liptak who all played a few less than 50.

Yes if Skipworth has chalked up 50 SANFL games he could be in.

Not a bad lineup there Macca19. That'd be a huge test for my team.

Although the SANFL has been head and shoulders above the WAFL for the last 10 years I reckon in the early 1990's the WAFL was stronger. That's coming from someone who follows both leagues closely.

The pendulum swung firmly towards SA after Alan Stewart coached South Australia to a crushing 65-point win over WA at Subi in 1996 and completely outcoached John Dimmer. We were given a football lesson that day!

I would argue that the SANFL has always been a stronger competition- however, you're best side wouldn't be far off our best side.

Roger James would almost qualify.

Would have to find a spot for Andrew Payze.
