Largest, latest ladder jump in one round

Postby SimonH » Mon May 10, 2010 12:48 am

Norwood went from 8th at the start of the weekend, to 3rd at the end of it. That kind of leap would be totally unremarkable after round 2, but for round 7, that takes not just an awesome result by the winning side, but also some real cooperation by almost every other team in the competition.

Is this the largest one-round jump this far into the season, in SANFL history?*

And more generally, have there been any improbable and huge last-minute jumps at the death of the minor round in SANFL history (or that part of SANFL history where finals have been played), e.g. a club coming from 6th at the start of the last round to grab the double chance, or a team coming from 7th to make the finals?

* In asking this, I do acknowledge that there's a minor cheat on for the contemporary age, because the bye over the last 20 years makes it easier for clubs to take a big leap.

It is a Round 7 record. Here are the records for each round up until Round 10:

Rd 2 - 6 by North from 10th to 4th (1977)
6 by South from 9th to 3rd (1983)
6 by Sturt from 9th to 3rd (1986)
6 by Glenelg from 8th to 2nd (1996)
Rd 3 - 6 by Central from 9th to 3rd (1999)
Rd 4 - 7 by South from 10th to 3rd (1969)
Rd 5 - 4 by Sturt from 7th to 3rd (2007)
Rd 6 - 4 by Norwood from 7th to 3rd (1972)
4 by Sturt from 8th to 4th (1972)
4 by South from 6th to 2nd (1982)
Rd 7 - 5 by Norwood from 8th to 3rd (2010)
Rd 8 - 3 by Glenelg from 9th to 6th (1971)
3 by West from 10th to 7th (1973)
3 by Norwood from 7th to 4th (2008)
Rd 9 3, on 8 occasions, latest was North from 7th to 4th (2008)
Rd 10 - 4 by Central from 9th to 5th (1978)

The only occasions where a team has moved up three spots after that round are:
Rd 12 - Central, 4th to 1st (1988)
Rd 14 - Central, 8th to 5th (1990)
Rd 15 - Central, 10th to 7th (1965)

There have been 9 instances of a team jumping 2 spots in the final round but the only occasion to match your query was when South in 1990 went from 7th to 5th.

Awesome work as usual spelly.

So as I read you, this was the first-ever 5-place jump in one round, occurring after round 4. Nice.
