I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread for discussion relating to anything to do with the SANFL in the 1980's (my favourite SANFL decade)..

Favourite Moment:
1986 1st Semi v Port.
But plenty of memories growing up as a kid - memories of watcing the '84 GF, attending '85 & 86 GF's, 1988 the last "great" year of SANFL footy IMO, watching some footy at the Bay, the smell of rain, wet leaves and tobacco smoke on a grey winters arvo.


Biggest Disappointment:
1986 prelim
1987 last two months
1988 start which cost us a finals spot
1990 leading Glenelg by 6 goals to equal top of table, lost and then season fell in a hole.

He certainly was a good player in those early 80's premiership years. Its unfortunate he wasn't able to stay at the club for the premierships in the latter part of the decade. Presumably he either saw the writing on the wall or the club told him he'd struggle to get a game and he should find a new club.

I'm not sure what year he moved to West, at a guess it must have been around 86.

I'm not sure what year he moved to West, at a guess it must have been around 86.

Last year at Alberton was '85.

Big youth push at the time as the club was in a rebuilding phase.

John Cahill coaching Westies probably factored into the move to Richmond as well.

Finished top-10 in the '82 Magarey and played state footy as well.

No mean feat to pull on the red guernsey considering the quality of rovers running around the SANFL in the early-80s...

Bit of a surprise that you included Cloke instead of Bennett there, LL. I recall Cloke played in the early 80's when North struggled a bit. Was he a standout then?

I also thought that Carlaw might be a chance on the wing, possibly at the expense of Perkins.

A few random recollections from the era:

* the skit that Bomber Clifford and Bruce Lindner did during the Magarey Medal telecast, either 83 or 84.
* the State of Origin games in the mid 80's at Footy Park, i think it was 86 and 87 when we beat the Vics in close games in consecutive years. Umpire John Russo's interpretion that night brought many nightmare to SA supporters.
* the "Mr 1 to 10" ads with Graham Campbell
* Woodville's finals series in 86
* the Kenmax Goal, Mark and Play of the Day. I presume that business folded years ago, haven't heard anything of them for years
* KG's footy show each Saturday evening
* Seven's BIG REPLAY in the early 80's. Loved it, especially when my team was featured
* the intense rivalry between North and Glenelg from 85 to 87
* South's battle in the late 80's and some of the cult figures they had such as Klenjans and Gatti

Perkins didn't start until 1990, but Carlaw was a long, long way behind wingmen such as Sanders, B Phillips and Campbell. Cloke was an absolutely outstanding player in a poor side. Most objective observers thought that he was very, very unlucky not to win the 1979 Magarey Medal. Tommy Hafey once said on radio that he rated Peter Cloke with Royce Hart as the best mark that he ever coached. It didn't stop him from sacking Cloke.

A few random recollections from the era:

Bomber Boy bread? The slogan was "It's official", but the pun was Bomber spelling it to kids who couldn't remember the slogan..."O-F-F".."It's OFF!!"

1984 remains an amazing memory. Was sitting about 10 rows back from Peter Motley's mark. Still one of the best I have ever seen. Small matter of Kernahan kicking 10 in a losing team that night also
* the "Mr 1 to 10" ads with Graham Campbell

"Remember folks, don't just tip the winners, back 'em on Footypunt!"
* Woodville's finals series in 86

Almost seemed like the whole state was behind them. Have an old News cartoon somewhere of a bloke reading a bedtime story to his son, talking about "a team in green and gold, chasing the impossible dream, against all the odds". His thought bubble was "America's Cup". His son's was Woodville.

* the Kenmax Goal, Mark and Play of the Day. I presume that business folded years ago, haven't heard anything of them for years
Focus Video also had an award at some point, with a prize being a state-of-the-art video recorder, with a remote control. Connected to the player by about 30cm of cable. Kenmax are now Kosmo's, I believe.

* KG's footy show each Saturday evening
Goes without saying that this was standard viewing in my house as long as I can remember. Somewhere, my mum has a tape of family life that day (yes, slow news day at home on a rainy day with kids) and KG's show is playing in the background

* Seven's BIG REPLAY in the early 80's. Loved it, especially when my team was featured
Peter Marker, Ian Day, Rick Keegan among many callers. Still say that Peter Marker remains one of the best TV commentators SA has seen. Clear, concise, no hyperbole. They started the show in 1985 with some of the best marks from the previous year and I always used to wait for Ray Huppatz's amazing grab at Footy Park

* the intense rivalry between North and Glenelg from 85 to 87
Younger fans probably don't appreciate how strong this was at the time.

* South's battle in the late 80's and some of the cult figures they had such as Klenjans and Gatti
Their financial battles were pretty tough. Remember when players were asked to accept 20c in the dollar for the year's payments.

And 88' in a Carnival IIRC .. Reckon Sticks kicked a bag again and Im pretty sure that after losing a tooth from him, Macca swung the kitchen sink at Greg Williams and whilst not many might have connected, Williams quickly found out what was to be expected.

Also remember Macca ironing out the Irishman at the WACA in the Gaelic series (not to mention the earlier Gaelic series in Ireland lol)

I wonder if that was the same game when Brereton struggled, I think Martin Leslie flexed his muscles a bit, although it might have actually been Andrew Rogers who stood Dermie.
