I know Im gonna regret this, but I just cant let it slide.

Ford didnt withdraw their funding from 888 because they had red cars. They pulled funding from EVERY team, except FPR and Stone Brothers Racing. Triple 8 Racing is a private team, whereas FPR is the Ford factory team, and I believe SBR was the factorys satelitte team. Dont quote me on that last part.

I look forward to a lengthy argument that goes round in circles

Correct. In my opinion they put their dollars on the wrong horse. Indeed it was DJR who won the title for Ford back in 2010. (and now, SBR go and jump ship...)

good to see 888 get beat in race 2 by there customer team tekno. speaking of tekno imo they could be a dark horse this year especially if the giz fires on all 8 cylinders for the year! loved his after race celebration on sunday too!!

What were peoples thoughts on Ken Block? was looking forward to it prior to clipsal but after thursday i was less than convinced, could only see half of his display at the T9 hairpin as i was in the T8 stands.

very disappointed with Block, and even more so when we lost 2 categories from last year for him to be here

When Roland Dane writes in a letter to fans I think it's fair to say it's true. read his 3rd paragraph.

I don't blame 888 shifting makes. They stuck to their contractual obligations and Ford chose to sook about it. The blue oval is now paying for that decision by being almost out numbered 3 to 1 by the General.

it was a massive gamble to make the move. Having 2 of the best drivers did help but it could of really meant the end of 888 racing.

bullshit. the engineering at 888 is better than any other team in pit lane. they were always going to be successful after changing "makes". they had the fastest, most reliable cars as well as two of the best drivers going around. last year they were still selling cars/parts to teams on both sides of the holden/ford fence. basically the only difference in the cars last year was the engines and a few other minor parts. and changing from a ford nascar block to a chev nascar block is miniscule.

and that letter states that ford didnt renew their contract with 888. it never says that the team was told that it was because their cars were red, it says that ford have stated elsewhere that was the reason (imo that was ford just trying to minimise the fallout from dropping their most successful team, and it was a childish excuse at that)

888 were not the only team to have their ford sponsorship stopped, it was all bar 2 teams as HH3 stated. the others were not red either. ford dropped 888. holden made them an offer, of course they were going to take them up on it, and as the letter you linked states, if holden had made the offer to the other teams, they would have likely taken it up too, but where is the fun in an all holden v8 supercar series? although the hq racing was really good to watch so it may have still worked ;)

you obviously have no idea do you. Yes they are one of the best teams going around but it didn't mean that it was all going to work out for them when they went to holden. It would of only taken a couple bad season and they would of been done, they would of lost sponsor's then started to lose people. Ford reason for droping 888 racing was because there cars where red and they made some crap up that they where suppose to paint it blue.

You are both right. Ford pulled sponsorship money to all V8 teams except for two as a way to save money. It was decided that they would only provide funding to teams whose cars were blue.

Ford cuts back on V8 funding
July 3, 2008
Guy Hand

Spurned Team Vodafone has vowed to prove wrong Ford's decision to pull its V8 Supercar funding by remaining the carmaker's most successful outfit this year and in 2009.
Ford has announced plans to strip funding from most of its V8 teams next year including Team Vodafone, its most successful outfit over the past three years, and the iconic Dick Johnson Racing.
In a cost-cutting move designed to save millions, Ford will concentrate its sponsorship money on just two teams from 2009 - Ford Performance Racing (FPR) and Stone Brothers Racing.
Ford will continue to provide race car shells, panels and technical support for the other teams racing its cars.
The major shock is Ford pulling the funding pin on Team Vodafone, home to the marque's best known driver Craig Lowndes and last year's championship runner-up Jamie Whincup.
The team has fought out the championship for the past two seasons, won the past two Bathurst 1000s, and won 16 rounds over the past three years - far more than any other Ford outfit.
Team Vodafone boss Roland Dane slammed Ford's decision and vowed it would make his team more determined than ever to win this year's championship and Bathurst.
"Whenever you've been sacked by your girlfriend, you're going to try to get a better looking one," Dane said.
"Of course it makes us more determined to do better. In sport, I thought the most important thing is to win.
"We haven't just won more rounds than any other Ford team over the past three years, we've won more rounds than any other team.
"We've won twice as many rounds as the rest of the Ford teams put together."
It is understood a major factor in Ford's decision to channel its funding elsewhere is Team Vodafone's cars carry their major sponsor's red colours, while Ford is determined to brand its teams in traditional Ford blue.
But Team Vodafone will keep racing Falcons until at least the end of the 2009 season, bound by Lowndes' contract and the fact they are already heavily committed in preparing their race cars for next year.
Ford won't say exactly how much the move to tighten its sponsorship will save, but it is understood to be upwards of $3 million.
But Ford said its V8 Supercar outlay would remain the brand's biggest Australian sporting sponsorship.
Ford's move to strip Blue Oval legend Johnson's team of sponsorship is certain to polarise opinion among loyal Ford fans who fondly remember his days as the marque's leading driver throughout the 1980s.
"He's been a great ambassador for Ford and the sport over the past 30 years and he will remain a motorsport icon," Ford Australia marketing and sale vice-president Mark Winslow said of Johnson.
"We've provided many millions over Dick's racing career, but there comes a time things need to change."
Johnson's son Steven now drives for Dick Johnson Racing, along with up-and-coming Will Davison.
FPR driver Mark Winterbottom leads the V8 championship going into this weekend's round six in Darwin.

if you truly believe that it would have only taken a couple of bad seasons and they would have been done then the same could have happened if they stayed at ford, for that matter it could still happen! a couple of bad seasons hasnt seen the end of any of the other teams currently racing has it? its irrelevant anyway, cos it didnt happen.

of course it was going to work at holden. they are far too good for it not to have. and the only real difference between the holden and ford race cars is the pattern for the engine block (and only the pattern, 888 actually manufacture their own blocks to the appropriate patterns, and they actually make both holden and ford blocks too). everything else is the same. how is changing sponsors (cos effectively that was all they did) going to suddenly make them uncompetitive?

what was fords reasons for dropping their sponsorship of the other ford teams oh wise one?? they werent red cars either.....

Triple 8 were never in any trouble of not being around any more, no matter how many bad seasons they had or how many sponsors dropped off. The parity between the Fords and Holden's meant there was absolutely no risk in the move

I dont think Ford wouldve stuck with 888 if they kept the Betta Electrical livery though.

That article only says it is "understood" Ford only wanted blue cars. Thats probably sourced from Roland Danes letter to their fans.

Also, Whincup and Lowndes being just as dominant in the Holdens as they were in the Fords just proves how little which car they drive matters. The cars are almost identical performance wise, its just how the teams develope them over the course of the year. 888 is an international racing team who are always going to be successful because they have the resources and the right people in place. If they decided to put a Merc on the track next year, they would still be competitive, in my opinion.

of course it was going to work? so whats the issues at erebus motorsport then? It's not just a matter oh there good enough to do it will just happen. Yeh they can build cars but it's not just the car or the driver that wins you a race it's the whole team. You got mechanics that can work out how to get that extra .5sec out of the car or can't troubleshoot a problem with and your done. It was possible that it could of went pear shape, and anyone that doesn't believe so it basically a idiot for thinking that.

You do realise they retained all their staff when they changed to Holden? Same mechanics, same drivers, mostly the same running gear. The biggest change was the shell.

Erabus started from scratch in this category. They came from the GT series, which has different rules for how the cars are made.
