Yes HH3, definitely felt it @ Modbury North. My missus thought the contents of our wardrobe were falling out, the doors were rattling that much. She woke up because of it. I thought there was someone at our back door (which is a set of bi-fold/cafe doors), then the computer monitor started shaking. The whole thing would've been done and dusted in 5 seconds.

I was at Civic Park playing Soccer at this time and didn't notice a thing :?

Re: Earthquake

Post by Psyber »

I was just falling asleep, at home in the hills about half way between Adelaide and the epicentre, when it happened.
At first I thought it was an unusually loud train going past, then I realised it was a mild earth tremor, noted the time and went back to sleep instantly.
I guess with my house being double brick on a concrete slab it didn't move much, and that damped the effect.
I'd experienced a few more severe ones in the Dandenong Ranges over the last couple of years.

Only a baby earthquake, but looks like the source might have been quite shallow, hence the shaking.

Great info/pics Purch - and wow - no wonder we felt it quite 'strongly' at McLaren Vale - not far away from us at all

Sitting through such a minor earthquake last night - I can only imagine how horrific a 'big' one would be :(

I was scared enough with the small one - I think the fact it was in the middle of the night and also that I was wondering if there might be a 'bigger' one around the corner was what I was more scared about - but yeah - would not want to be caught up in a 'real' thing :(

Not a very nice feeling your legs shaking under you (weird and hard to describe actually...lol) and your glass cabinet behind you clattering and shaking.

The only reason I felt it was because I was awake, if I'd been asleep I doubt it would have woken me up.

It was a really weird feeling, only lasted for about 3 secs but felt like very strong gully winds and the whole house shook.

My missus said it was a earthquake but I said don't be stupid ... please don't tell her she was right. :-$

Should have said ... did the Earth move for you Dear? ;)

I felt it here at Largs North, I was watching the end of the footy and I felt the ground shake and the windows rattled aswell. At first I thought it was a plane flying over and had an argument with my sister about it, but i heard on the news this morning at it was confirmed, we had an earthquake!!

OK. I'm bored waiting for today's clash at Unley, so here's a little South Australian geological trivia for you.

> The largest earthquake to have occurred in SA since 1837 was a Magnitude 6.5 quake near Beachport. It caused massive damage at Kingston, Robe and Beachport, and caused minor damage in Adelaide.

Image

> The second largest in SA was a magnitude 6.0 in 1902, centred in Gulf St Vincent, and mainly affected Warooka on Yorke Peninsula:

> The Flinders & Mt Lofty Ranges represent the one of the most seismically active geological belts in mainland Australia.

> The Gawler Range Volcanics covering ~25,000 square kilometres on northern Eyre Peninsula represent probably the largest felsic (quartz rich) volcanic event in the Earth's history. The volume of volcanic rock, mainly dacite and rhyolite, is in the order of ~100,000 cubic kilometres. They were super hot magmas (900-1100°C) that would have been extremely explosive when they were erupted ~1590 million years ago.

> Fossils discovered in 1946 by Red Sprigg in the Ediacara Hills of the Northern Flinders Ranges represent some of the oldest multicellular life forms known to science. The site is so significant that it is a protected geological monument (poachers have been an issue in the past) and it is the only site in the southern hemisphere that has a geological period named after it. Its status as an official geological period (Ediacaran Period: 635 to 542 million years ago) was ratified in 2004 by the International Union of Geological Sciences. It is the only new geological period declared in the last 120 years.

> Olympic Dam is in the top 10 largest copper resources in the world. It is the world's largest uranium resource by a country mile. It is Australia's largest gold resource. The copper, uranium and gold minerals are hosted in granite (Hiltaba Granite) which crystallised from a magma at roughly the same time as the Gawler Range Volcanic event, 1590-1580 million years ago.

> Australia has 30% of the world's uranium reserves. Most of this is in SA.

> Much of eastern SA is underlain by the South Australian Heat Flow Anomaly, which is the result of heat generated by natural radioactive decay of potassium, thorium and uranium in deeply buried granites.

> Paralana Hot springs in the northern Flinders are a surface expression of this heat flow anomaly. The springs are hot (57°C) and radioactive due to the interaction of ground waters with radioactive rocks in the Mount Painter area. Micro-organisms live quite happily in the radioactive springs.

Yeah yeah I know where Iceland is mate. I think what you're seeing there in the mid Atlantic is the P-wave shadow zone...P-waves are refracted when they pass through the transition between the mantle and the liquid outer core

Melbourne had one recently house moved lights flickered and that was it. Mrs. Strawb said to me about it. Living near the You Yangs doesn't worry me but i heard there is a fault line through them.

Reckon I was lying in bed with the MP3 player on. Heard a bit of a rumble through the 'phones and thought it was the bloke across the road on his motorcycle. Thought "what sort of @-hole revs his motorbike at 11:30 PM" and thought no more about it.
