Re: Port Adelaide 2022
Interestingly one captain thought Port would miss the eight. Wonder who that was?

Re: Port Adelaide 2022
After 4.5 years I want more than glimpses. You don’t think 4.5 years is enough time to motor up? Remember most of these kids have come from the elite junior programs where aerobic fitness is a part of their development, they're not starting from scratch.valleys07 wrote:I disagree. There is enough to suggest Hayes CAN develop into an AFL standard ruckman. He was an elite tap ruckman at junior level which hasn't left him and we have seen glimpses of at both SANFL level and during this pre-season. He has a way to go to develop the motor required to cover the ground enough to make regular impact at AFL level, and the by product of that increased aerobic capacity will be the contested marking, extra tall in defence etc, which we lack. Nankervis destroyed us in the last Q of the 2020 prelim, and I don't want to talk about the same game in 2021. Both games heavily influenced by ruck/midfield dominance.Vamos wrote:Hayes not up to it imo, not even close. Losing Ladhams will cost us dearly, Marshall/Finlayson will have to ruck if Lycett wants a spell or gets injured.Dutchy wrote:I said this last year, thought he was labouring mid season, Hayes needs to play.valleys07 wrote: Lycett is looking to me like the game has passed him by, and at what point do we get games into Sam Hayes to be ready for our next tilt?
We need to get games into Hayes asap, ready for that next tilt.
Whoops, there goes another year. Whoops, there goes another pint of beer.

Re: Port Adelaide 2022
Considering 2018 was wiped out with an ACL and he lost another year of development in 2020 when Port Adelaide's reserves weren't allowed to compete in the SANFL, he has had 2 full seasons of SANFL to develop, one which culminated in a B&F win.Vamos wrote:After 4.5 years I want more than glimpses. It's well noted that talls take time to develop, first comes building the frame and then the aerobic capacity. Max Gawn, for instance, was selected in the 2010 national draft and didn't solidify himself in a very average Melbourne line up until midway through 2015. Your NicNat's and Luke Jackson's of the world are the exceptions to the rule.
I think Hayes is progressing nicely and I expect him to debut this season.
Would have I liked Pete Ladhams in the side? Absolutely. However, Pete himself is the reason behind that trade, and unless he has had a complete change of mindset upon arriving at Sydney, he will not deliver on his enormous potential.

Fair call, you've convinced me. Barring forced selection I think we need to choose carefully which games he plays.valleys07 wrote:Considering 2018 was wiped out with an ACL and he lost another year of development in 2020 when Port Adelaide's reserves weren't allowed to compete in the SANFL, he has had 2 full seasons of SANFL to develop, one which culminated in a B&F win.Vamos wrote:After 4.5 years I want more than glimpses. Re: Port Adelaide 2022
Do effectively a 6 year deal for Houston and wasn't Clurey playing SANFL last year?

Houston gets a five year deal, what's Butters and Rozee asking?
Any reason for Port fans to be a little nervous that they're deals haven't been done?

Not that I think that we're a real major threat but I think midfield depth is probably the least of our worries.Dutchy wrote:just cant see how Port can win it with their lack of midfield depthcracka wrote:I reckon its Ports year. Re: Port Adelaide 2022
Agreed, our top end stacks up ok with the best. Wines, Boak, Butters, Amon, Drew, that 5 holds up against most other top 5 midfield units.Lightning McQueen wrote:Not that I think that we're a real major threat but I think midfield depth is probably the least of our worries.Dutchy wrote:just cant see how Port can win it with their lack of midfield depthcracka wrote:I reckon its Ports year. We then get Rozee, Gray, Houston, Duursma, Bergman, SPP. Our midfield might not have as much top end talent but I'd argue our depth is pretty good.

I think thats your problem they all very good but their all very similar in ability size and performance.Booney wrote:

Compared to Brisbane, Melbourne, Richmond (not so much last year) and the Dogs you haven't got the elite big dogs and can just dominate the clearances. Their premiers of the last five years all have that 1st ruck combo that can just up the ante and take the game away from any opposition with clean efficient possessions. e.g the last 1 min of the 3rd qtr in last years GF
Your midfield is very good but just that level below the the other four clubs I mentioned.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
