Re: SANFL 2021 SEASON

Post by DOC »

SANFL can confirm it will not be introducing the AFL’s new 23rd player Medical Substitute Rule in the SANFL Statewide Super League following a decision today by the South Australian Football Commission.

The Commission endorsed SANFL’s recommendation not to adopt the new AFL rule, noting that SANFL had increased its number of interchange players in 2019 from three to four, ensuring sufficient players on the bench for up to 75 rotations and to replace injured players unable to participate any further in a match.

The Commission also maintained the current rule for AFL-listed players, with the AFL medical substitute player not permitted to play in the SANFL State League on the same weekend if they are activated during the AFL match. This will be regardless of the amount of time the player has on the field in an AFL match.

While the AFL announced that the medical substitute player could play State League football the same weekend, regardless of whether they are activated or not, SANFL’s current rule does not allow this.

However, should the medical substitute player not participate in the AFL match, they will be considered as an emergency player and therefore permitted to play in the SANFL that same weekend.

Oh I get it. WE need to change our league for the benefit of you.

To complain (by writing to Big Brother in order to have pressure brought) that you can not "access" (take) SANFL contracted players, as well as not being able to "access" (take) Next Generation Academy players (such as Jason Horne) as well as "accessing" (taking) father/son players isn't enough, you want the playing rules changed to suit you as well.

You forgot to mention that you should be allowed to play any player suspended by the AFL. Perhaps all games should only be played at Alberton as it is AFL standard?

And here is some news. The AFL do not run the SANFL (remarkable I know) so their announcement that they would allow it is not their decision to make. And this statement, "Unfortunately this issue is a microcosm of what we are facing with the SANFL on an increasingly regular basis. The AFL introduce rules and regulations to the state leagues under their auspices" is to suggest that the AFL run the SANFL.

Go play in the VFL then.

THE Port Adelaide Football Club is disappointed in the decision by the SANFL regarding the use of AFL medical substitutes in the state league competition.

The SANFL Commission determined that a medical substitute who is activated and takes to the field at AFL level, will not be allowed to play in the SANFL on the same weekend regardless of the amount of time the player has spent on the field.

This decision is in direct contrast to the AFL announcement that a medical substitute player would be allowed to play state league football on the same weekend regardless of whether they had been activated or not.

“When the AFL announced the medical substitute rule it specifically stated that the substitute player would be permitted to participate at State League level regardless of whether they were activated during the AFL match,” Port Adelaide General Manager – Football, Chris Davies said.

“The SANFL have disregarded this position, putting them at odds with the AFL. This rule has been adopted by the VFL and the WAFL and the SANFL’s decision means there are now 16 clubs operating on one model and two on another.

“Unfortunately this issue is a microcosm of what we are facing with the SANFL on an increasingly regular basis. The AFL introduce rules and regulations to the state leagues under their auspices, designed to assist in the development of the game and the talent within it, with the SANFL picking and choosing the parts of the rules and regulations that they accept based on the position of the SANFL at the time.

“We’re now at a point where we have written to the AFL to highlight that these issues, when grouped, see us competing under materially different conditions to those of our AFL competitors. There can be no denying that the current environment compromises our ability to develop the talent available to our playing list when compared to our competitors in the AFL competition.

Differing rules and limitations:

Access to state league contracted players
Access to Next Generation Academy and father-son players
Differing rules, ie. stand on the mark rule, 3rd man up at ruck contests, last touch out of bounds, medical substitute

It would be so much better without them as was shown last season .Just disappear from our comp, the rules are for all teams in the SANFL not just them.

I just loved how many times Davies said the word “integrity”. It was like he was trying to convince himself.
And then follows up with “It sees us competing under materially different conditions to those of our AFL competitors”.
Unlike the materially different advantages you’ve enjoyed in the SANFL since becoming an AFL reserves side.

Credit where it is due.

The Advertiser has upped it's coverage of the SANFL and will live stream the Norwood v Port match tonight.

A couple of post-round-1 musings to kill the ennui on Easter Monday:

This week's Budget was only 20 pages, cover to cover. Take out 8 pages of team listings (including reserves and womens), a couple of full-page adverts, and the front & back covers, and there wasn't much left. By comparison last year's round 1 & 2 budgets were 40 pages and contained a lot of reading material and stats info on top of the team lists. Are we going to have a limited Budget for the rest of the season?

There was a small article by Zac Milbank on page 18 stating that the Stanley H Lewis trophy is going to count women's games and U/16s for the first time this year. Women's games will count for 100 points, same as the senior men's. Under 16s will count for 25 points. Reserves and U18s will count for 50 points as before.

Now to open up the can of worms: Is this the best distribution of points among the various comps?

NO it's wrong.

The women's League is NOT the same standard as the SANFL Men. I would even say it is a lower standard than the u18 and maybe even the U16.

I would allocate the points as below.

League 100
Reserves 50
U18 50
U16 25
Women 25

The Stanley H Lewis will be a joke if they've done that.
A shame.

I tend to agree it shouldn’t be worth the same but do the SANFL really want to open that can of worms.

That is a today tonight story waiting to happen, you could almost guarantee the AFL would ‘get involved’ just to be seen as great.

For mine just allow it to be the same, I wouldn’t have a clue what year we won the trophies through those premiership years. No one really cares about it anyway. Maybe like previously mentioned just make all grades the same.

All our clubs will be dreading the AFL mid season draft. PA and Adelaide might just pick some current player to make them stronger in the SANFL. From the Eagles, James Tsitas looks ready to play at a higher level as does Dane McFarlane . I liked the look of Voss from Sturt last week.

I agree but imagine the uproar if they did that. I'd be pretty surprised if any of the women's teams could beat any of the u/16's, unfortunately that doesn't matter these days.
