Good observation, from the clubs' perspective.

However, from the player's perspective it means that if you're not taken early on in the draft you're probably not going to make it at the top level.

depends on what "making it" means.

plenty of Rory Lairds and Lawrence Angwins to prove exceptions to the rule too

Lots of late picks turned out to be absolute stars of the game too.

what might be more interesting is what percentage of afl players become 100/200 game players.

and those percentages for first round picks vs the rest.

it may be double the rate for fist round draft picks, but its still going to be pretty low i think.

watch "the greatest" last night

was just one of those crappy list shows but had it on in the background

They counted down the greatest goals in history, and rated Eddie's as the best.

Hard to argue. Still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. And have never been more excited attending the footy than that moment

Perhaps it also demonstrates that stats are sort of bullshit. ;)

Definitely, there's always exceptions, I'm simply speaking in terms of probabilities.

I use the term 'making it' to means becoming an established player, and crafting a career out of playing AFL footy - making a name in the game, which then provides something bankable.

stats are stats. its whether the correct inferences are made from them.

just because you can pick a single counter example it doesnt mean the stat is bullshit.

I presume this bolshy reply is aimed at my previous post.

Ease up, Benny. I like stats as much as you obviously do. You've rather quickly forgotten I endorsed your initial conclusion about giving up high draft picks, so it's clear I don't really means that they're bullshit. Look for the little smiley winky man at the end of the sentence next time, it means I'm not really being serious.

Drawing a probability-based conclusion based on those percentages is a correct inference, given I also qualified what I thought 'making it' meant. Up to others to judge whether I'm right on that score. With further data you could tear my proposition to shreds, as you've correctly suggested.

'A single counter example'? Where?

Time for a Bex, a lie down, and some more Eddie Betts vids. ;)

How did some of the freakish goals Peter Daicos kicked rate in that list?

Only had one offically in the list (number 7 i think, vs richmond at vic park) they did do a package of his other goals not in the list though

Watching Gary Ablett being interviewed on the footy show was the worst TV I have ever seen. Seriously hang your head in shame, just incredibly terrible journalism. I know we all know the footy show is gutter TV but that was an all time low. When Shane Crawford is the only one asking intelligent questions you know something is wrong.

Saw a little bit and it was shocking. Can't believe the Suns allowed him to do it

Yeah hutchy seems desperate... the kind of journo who would hide in and dig through bins to get the story.
They think they're asking the questions that the public want - wrong, they are only satisfying their own need to flog the same story that has been around for ages. How many times does he need to answer the same question, clearly he's not going to elaborate any further.

Caro had a crack at Hutchy on Classified on Monday night saying The Footy Show was mad for paying GAj for the interview. She made it clear GAj doesn't do anything unless there's a cheque involved....
