Re: South Africa vs Australia 1st Test
Hey Spelly/A Hawk is this the first test (Hughes, Hillfenhaus, North) since the Adel test of 85-86 (Hughes, Marsh, Reid) when we've had three debutants??
The two debutant tests I can recall
88-89 Sydney test it was Taylor and Hohns
94-95 Adel test Blewett and McIntyre
95-96 Perth test Law and Ponting (Law may have been Hobart so not 100% sure)
99-00 Brisbane test Gilchrist and Muller
I'm struggling to recall a test since 85-86 when we've had three debutants??

Re: South Africa vs Australia 1st Test
Im presuming the line up is
1. Simon Katich
2. Phil Hughes
3. Ricky Ponting
4. Michael Clarke
5. Michael Hussey
6. Marcus North
7. Brad Haddin
8. Andrew McDonald
9. Mitchell Johnson
10. Ben Hilfenhaus
11. Peter Siddle
Sounds like the selectors are worried about our batting depth by chosing McDonald over Bollinger. To me the problem is bowling.
Sorry can't see us bowling SAF out for anything less than 400 in either innings with that attack. please please please please please be wrong though

Re: South Africa vs Australia 1st Test
I know they had a little deal with Hughes and Katich re fielding/facing first ball, but Katich should've taken first ball IMO.

Re: South Africa vs Australia 1st Test
Well... that was shortlived.
BTW - commentary just said Hughes was the 17th youngest player to debut for Australia and the youngest since Craig McDermott.
Australia last debuted three players in a test in 1985. At a rough guess - Tim Zoehrer, Bruce Reid and Geoff Marsh.

Will NFC be OK? That was the biggest build up to a test debut ever! Reality check for everyone, including Hughes hopefully. Onwards and upwards from here.
DW:
Test cap numbers:
332 - Hughes
333 - Marsh
334 - Reid
337 -Zoehrer
Tassie is OTM ... again

Re: South Africa vs Australia 1st Test
I got two out of three. The third was Merv Hughes (who I thought was a candidate), Rogernumber10's favourite player

Well the only way is up for hughes from now on...
I hope in 15 years time after 150 odd tests he doesn't finish with a duck...

NFC, Hughes might have asked for the first ball, I know I always liked to face first up when opening.
You could almost see himself change his mind mid shot from over the top to then try and get over it - hey presto bottom edge.
Go with your instincts son.

Re: South Africa vs Australia 1st Test
Hope this wrong BUT on bigpond live scores they have McDonald batting at 7. and Haddin coming in at 8. SURELY NOT
I thought Haddin was starting to hit form and find his feet as a test batsmen, this will be the last straw for me if correct.

Re: South Africa vs Australia 1st Test
Well according to one or two posters on BigFooty, Ponting electing to bat first is a sign of the arrogance of the Australians?

Each player has different opinions as you know. I think Hughes normally takes strike first and clearly Katich doesnt like it so no harm here i dont think.
Poor shot regardless.

2/18 Katich gone, Steyn has 2 wickets
For Australia's sake i do hope the weather comes in now.

Re: South Africa vs Australia 1st Test
Nice bouncy bowler friendly pitch, great to watch
Better than the garbage road pitch where a guy made 313 odd in the sub continent
No disrespect but if Younis Khan had to face these South Affies on these tracks he would most likely not make 313 in the series
If all pitches were like this good batting averages would rightfully hover at about 40 as they should be
