I had dinner with a Liberal MP from NSW last night who is staying with mutual friends here.
He is not a huge fan of Tony either, but we agreed he is effectively in tune with the voters right now.

As I read in an article yesterday:

"As Tony Abbott has spent months demonstrating, convincing voters of something that reinforces their views is far easier than convincing them of something that doesn’t."

That is quite true, and he is doing it well.
The ALP has the harder job and is going about it badly.
Saying, "No Carbon Tax.", then saying in effect "We had our fingers crossed." before they had their detailed sales pitch ready was sloppy.
Rather like everything else they have done really...

That's his job isn' it? To speak on behalf of the people.

Come election time it is. Until then it is to voice peoples concerns regarding government policy.

Now of course this is just the theory of what the role of the opposition is, the practice is always very different.

That is what election campaigns are designed for.

If thats the case, why is that all he can talk about is giving the people their say and "when i win the election" and "lets have an election right now". You would think if he was fair dinkum about these things he might actually have a vague idea what his policies might be.

Haven't checked but I would be surprised if they aren't easily accesible on the Liberal Party website.

Are you basing his apparent lack of knowledge of his own parties policies on the 30 second snippets of half hour inerviews you watch on the news at night or have you attended them personally?

Happens to both leaders.

Just shows he is well aware of what his party policy is now, as he knows it well enough to know it is s***house.

Breaking a core election promise.

http://sgp1.paddington.ninemsn.com.au/s ... 61.asp?s=1

The very relevant part about breaking election promises:

TONY ABBOTT: Well, Laurie, when I made that statement, in the election campaign, I had not the slightest inkling that there would ever be any intention to change this. But obviously when circumstances change, governments do change their opinions, and that is actually the responsible course of action.

Far be it for me to say he lied, but given the current hysteria,

he lied :D

And one of the methods commonly employed by oppositions of both persuasions over time is to dismantle the government and the PM and whatever it is they are on about at any one time. The fact that lefties don't like Abbott is a major plus because it means he is really getting up your collective socialist noses. Go Tony (..or Malcolm or Joe - doesnt matter really)

People can make their own judgements, but the facts on this matter are:

Tony Abbott was Health Minister at the time, not the leader of the Liberal Party.

The decision to raise the threshold of the Medicare Safety net was made by Cabinet, not Tony Abbott. Abbott lobbied strongly for it to remain (perhaps because he believed in it, perhaps because he knew what he said. I don't know.)

In my opinion it is not a valid comparison.

It does matter. Would much rather either of these two instead of the mad monk, at least they tend to have some sort of idea about what they actually want.

so long as the Libs seize power and the looney Greens get boned and Labor ends up out in the car park I dont really care who steers the bus back to prosperity and confidence and border protection and common sense leadership. FFS!

So you don't have a preferred leader? At the moment i think 2 out of your 3 wishes will come to fruition, the third one is a long way off.
