Is this the first year the money from West Lakes has stopped filtering through to the clubs? As Wolf Pack says, there isn't enough revenue coming in. I'm sure Westies wouldn't be alone in the struggle - even if in a worse position at the moment.

Re: SANFL 2025
I know a bit more about what’s going on than many so let’s just calm down a little bit.
I wasn’t going to comment but I wanted to support my club.
I’ll only say one thing, don’t do the work you don’t always get to stay. They need to quickly sort out some issues and look after a couple that are already there. The constant negativity by some “supporters” doesn’t help, driving their own agenda and then people jumping on the bandwagon.
Having the extra exposure to South Road in the future will be a benefit but there is a lot of work to be done.

Re: SANFL 2025
I'm not sure the age of this article, but it indicates a private group of West supporters assisted in the club keeping the club rooms. There was an article in The Advertiser in 2014 that West were thinking of selling their club rooms.heater31 wrote:Think the West Torrens council own the lot???gazzamagoo wrote:I think the Crows would LOVE to absorb/align with West,

The West Torrens council would own the rest I imagine. Same as Thebarton Oval. When WWT merged, West Torrens sold the club rooms at Thebarton to inject into the WWTFC. One of the main reasons the club went to Woodville, as the Woodville clubrooms were owned by the council.

Re: SANFL 2025
Mate the AFL dont want a reserves competition, they've got to find money for an AFL club in Tassie - will take similar money to other expansion clubs, expand the AFLW competition and fund development programs. A reserves competition is low on their list of priorities. Far cheaper for the AFL to buy off the SANFL to get the concessions our two VFL franchises want than fund a reserves comp.Aerie wrote: I wasn't clear - I meant more so the AFL Reserves sides will leave. A 20th AFL club is more likely and than a reserves comp and based on current budgets that's $30 Mill from AFL coffers a year based on what they spend on the Gold Coast and GWS.
The two franchises dont want to spend the $$$ to join the VFL, they want the AFL to do it but the AFL have shown their hand saying it's far cheaper for us to give SANFL $$$ despite the AFL supporting some of the existing VFL teams in travel. The AFL has never been about transparency, equity and fairness...
Yep after 10 years that money has cease, SANFL clubs got their last distribution in 2023 I understand happy to be corrected.Aerie wrote:

It wasn’t that long ago that Sturt nearly closed their doors, but they managed to get through the worst of it by organising themselves really well and bringing in the right people.
Other clubs have had their struggles too but have managed. Handouts and lifeline payments can only do so much, clubs have to find a way to be sustainable.

Sturt have always had a big supporter base & good membership no’s, Glenelg too were in a world of pain not long ago, but again, strong supporter base. Westies seem to have an ageing & ever dwindling following - this is near impossible to turn around.dedja wrote:Well said.Brodlach wrote:I know a bit more about what’s going on than many so let’s just calm down a little bit.

Agree with the aging supporter base. The area is starting to become more family friendly rather than the older population it has been but winning solves a bit. Club has, in my 50 years of supporting, always eaten itself with factions from within . Needs to stop.
Needed to become more active with their local junior clubs which I believe is happening now.

Re: SANFL 2025
So $71m-$45m ( I can't find anywhere that states the debt was ever that high ) even with this half century old mush is $26m over 10 years and given it was drip fed to SANFuL clubs was the balance not invested to gain a return?am Bays wrote:$45 Mill went to paying off the debt the SANFL accrued in propping up the AFL franchises you know like changes to footy park from 1997-2012Booney wrote:In 10 years the $71m is gone?

But you already knew that
After the first distribution was there not say $22-24m left gaining interest? Even at a modest return there would be significant interest earnt. Enough almost to cover another years distribution ( basing it on 8 clubs getting the same nominal amount each year ) and so on and so on.
Koch asked where the future fund went and it got swept under the carpet.

Living in the next street for 10 years I knew blokes who wouldn't talk to each other sitting at the bar because one backed so and so and the other backed someone else.Brodlach wrote:Agree with the aging supporter base. As for local clubs it's all resources mate, if the club is struggling at the top end nothing would be trickling down the line to support those programs.
The hole seems to be getting deeper, sadly.

Re: SANFL 2025
I’m told each club has a full time junior coordinator, the one they have now works hard and perhaps the previous one wasn’t quite as hard working. It’s about building relationships and being organized

Just looking at the map you're not blessed with particularly fertile football grounds, bar the Riverland.Brodlach wrote:I’m told each club has a full time junior coordinator, the one they have now works hard and perhaps the previous one wasn’t quite as hard working. Port Road / South Road to Port Road / Sturt Road and surrounds isn't a particularly fertile area rich with top amateur clubs and the Coorong / Mallee areas seem to be more and more about clubs merging than growing.
That must play a role.

There are some very good local clubs though like Goodwood, Plymton, Edwardstown and PHOS (if they are in the zone)
