So Collingwood pay around 550k a year for 2 players not on their list. I heard this comes out of the soft cap which is another rort if true, it should come out the playing cap to deter ridiculous contracts. Loose change for clubs like Collingwood.

Yeah not sure where I heard it but you're right, just found an article saying Treloar's payment comes out of the Total Player Payments. Grundy's would be the same.

I'm guessing a lot of it comes with trial / error, different list management strategies etc. We are kind of seeing it at the moment with a lot of clubs trending to this massive length of contracts. There is obviously some theory behind it.......i know most AFL do a lot of work with NBA/NFL teams before from a high performance and administrational point of view so i wonder if it's something they have picked up over there.

I don't. It satisfies the player, the supporters and potentially the coach to lock someone into a long term contract - as the coach can then build around them with some confidence. What ruins it is doing it multiple times for multiple players during the same contract period putting them in danger of going over the salary cap - which is plain dumb.

If Carlton didn't lock in Harry McKay recently, I have no doubt that members would be ripping up their memberships. I know I'd rather lock him in than have him potentially leave to a rival.

Why would Gold Coast give pick 7 with Bowes, they have a plethora of picks dont they? Surely that same deal gets done with one of their later 20-30ish picks. Or even no pick at all - Bowes for Future 3rd seems like a reasonable deal! The system isnt broken, its smashed!

I don’t think we were ever going to be big players in this years trade period and Scott even said that it’s all about the next couple of years drafts with a few small trades for needs. Club won’t be making any sugar hit trades which I’m fine with.
Picked up Setterfield for nothing which helps our mids out a bit and look like basically turning Francis into Weideman which is neither here nor there. Should hopefully get 2 potentially good F/S picks in and a academy kid fingers crossed whilst bringing in a top pick aswell. Most likely finish bottom 4 next year so just keep hitting the draft and hopefully the club has learnt some lessons

Surely GC are bottom two either....i would have Essendon and Hawthorn ahead of them, they were pretty much breakeven.

I also feel as though Amon is a bit more than a "meh".

Not sure that Gunston is an upgrade for the Lions, Mc Stay has a few years in his favour and I'm not sure where Gunston will fit in up there.

Melbourne - maybe, Richmond - probably, Adelaide - no, IMO.

Amon is "meh" for Hawthorn as they're not going to get any better because of his addition.

McStay has never kicked more than 28 goals in a year, Gunston kicked 32 in 16 games playing for Hawthorn this year. He's just turned 30 so has 2-3 years in him.
