LHD -> RHD Car conversion

Does anyone know where in Adelaide this can be done? Mate my mine is buying a 57 Chev and needs to converted (or at least a quote before hand)

if it's not LHD then don't you have to register it as a classic or something can only drive it so much throughout the year and everything has to be original

Limited use vehicles ( like mine ), you get 90 days use throughout the year. Log booked.

Not log book entry, you are not insured. Rego cost is = to 3 months on normal vehicles.

Correct, no modifications, although there is some work being done on changing that.

I dont believe so....and estimate would be around $20k. I will look into it, but I think it is only a requirement if the vehicle is under 30 years old. Excluding the '57, obviously.

Basically, if he wants to modify it ( engine, gear box etc ) then he would still be able to leave it LHD, but he would not be on limited / historic use.

If he wants to keep it original and LHD he could go limited / historic use as it is over 30 years old.

It will depend on what, if anything has been done to it already.

its actually a touch less than 3 months on a 4 cylinder car, and assuming it is a V8, it is significantly less than 3 months on a v8.

and as far as i am aware, the working on allowing modifications has been well and truly squashed. the registrar of motor vehicles has absolutely no intention of changing that part of the requirements. there was a whole lot of wishfull thinking from the enthusiasts side of the negotiations (including one person that actually works for the dept of transport), but it was never going to happen from the governments side, unless you own a hot rod, they are allowed mods (infact their definition states that they must be modified )

regardless of modified or not, they cant be. last year they stopped the "rolling" 30 year age criteria and capped it at a permanent 1 january 1979. anything made before that date can qualify. (actually after a quick google, supposedly the silvias started production in 1964, so some would qualify!!)

personally i wouldnt mind too much if there were a slightly increased range of modifications available. other states allow some changes (not that it is a reason in itself to allow it), but it wont happen as there would be too much revenue lost if they opened the historic scheme to a greater range of vehicles.

if all of the people with mildly modified older cars, that only drive them occasionally anyway, were suddenly able to drop their rego costs by over three quarters the government would have a heart attack!! actually that might be worth watching, lol

Sadly not Booney, I was up at Old Oldens wreckers one time and there was a chap looking for an Air Chief AM Radio as his car club were not going to give him a historic permit because he had an FM radio in the car - that is how strict the rules are, you have to prove that you can physically not get a part before they allow a non genuine conversion to take place.

That said however, it in your situation, you get a V8 radiator then have a radiator place cut the holes in the 6cyl spots and weld up the others that have been closed off and no one is going to be any the wiser! Alternativley find out if you can get a 6cyl Radiator from a model that has Air Conditioning as usually its simply a V8 Radiator with the tanks reversed as above!
