Ok as I posted in bumcracks topic.Just been diagnosed(well a few weeks back) with type 2 diabetes.Yes all the weight I lost for knee operation 2 came back on around knee op 3.
Visited the Doc .had a blood test on the saturday. and I knew something was wrong while fasting .didnt feel quite right thought it was the BP.almost collapsed on the tuesday after the test, at the end of a hectic physical day at work .told on the thursday type 2 diabetes. My only clue always hot and sweating(hard to tell at work as its like exercising all day) waking up drenched in sweat in bed .And being tired and worn out all the time .My kids 18 and 21 freaked out one sunday I was watching a dvd with them fell asleep woke up drenched in sweat.Got my 21 yo to touch my hair both went off at me I was covered in sweat .That and on 20c day needing the air con turned on it was time .
So the doc says we will fix it with diet and exercise. Plus he sent me to the diabetic clinic at the QEH.attended two group sessions fantastic people.rather confusing but getting there. The diabetic nurse was not happy with my morning sugar levels .would go to normal during a work day.On her urgings I went back to my doc's .But before I did I tested my sugars on a day off started high stayed high.
Back at the docs put me on Metforim
Took the first tablet last night woohoo
why didn't we try this before.everything I was told I didnt see or read it suppressors the appetite .Fantastic didnt feel hungry after dinner.
The same thing today fantastic.
But it hasn't reduced the sugar level in the morning just yet .
I haven't had the other side affects yet fingers crossed .
And dont scoff 1 small salad sand-which at lunch like the last few weeks .First time I haven't been starving after wards.

OK guys rambled on enough
I feel so good its fantastic .

Good to hear you're feeling so much better Micky...hopefully you'll be posting tales from the riverbank again soon then ;) :D

I have heard from a few medical types over the years that the diet recommended for diabetics is probably the best one that everybody could follow so good luck with it all.

JAS

That was one of the most confusing things at the Clinic .Still not eating enough Carbs IMHO .
Funny they don't tell u that when u take this pill u feel really good .Thats not good English
Lets just say I was light headed feeling run down pop a pill suddenly I'm not .took 1/2 an hour to 45 minutes .did have a huge bloody thirst drank almost 1.25 litres of water in an hour last night.Had trouble sleeping but still had so much energy .
Today the first time I didn't feel like I was running on empty from 10 am until Lunch.Believe me I haven't increased what I ate at breakfast or morning Tea.
Rambling on again.

how many of these pills are you on?

metformin is used to treat a number of different symptoms and if taking numerous per day can have side effects

Yep taking a small dose as prescribed by the doc .Everything has side effects .
My type 2 diabetes with out this drug to my type 2 with this drug.
Head now clear no longer feeling light headed.Unless like the other day I didn't have anything to eat for morning tea started to get run down(about 11am hard to do manual work) until lunch. Before everyone goes oohh wow no smoko .I start work at 6.30 am have breakfast at 5.30am smoko is at 9.30am lunch at 12noon.Not my choice to have my breaks then but my works.
So much more energy it aint funny and I'm more upbeat than in years.
But with more energy I am not sleeping as much .Funny less sleep more energy can not work that out.
This pill suppresses your appetite .And it certainly does I have a bowl of porridge no milk(allergy) or sugar and I'm full for breakfast.I have either a salad sand-which or roll for lunch.to see a 5ft 11 guy over 100kilos sit there half way through a roll bursting with lettuce say I'm getting full. And struggle to finish it but I do.
Other side affects it could cause the runs (it hasn't),flatulence I'm a bloke how can u tell ;) .
And doctor don't take me off them please.I had to tuck my shirt into my pants at work yesterday as the pants were falling down lol . I could actually do that !!! First time in months secondly my work unifrom is getting big on me again yippeee.
Of course this drugs main job is to reduce my sugar levels in the morning. Not quite there yet nothing over 8 since taking them nothing under 7 either in the morning.normal as before when I have been to work.My work is like exercising for 8 to 10 hours a day .

Ok how to reduce my sugar levels with out the drug .Yep did it before lost 25 to 26 kilos .Blood sugar went back to normal or did it .My doc back then only took a pin prick after work, found out since then that gives a false reading.Of course back then I exercised and over exercised hurt myself most times but it worked for a year or two.

So pills or no pills that choice is mine or yours .But I am so much better happier and getting thin !!!!!!!!!
you be the judge
And I take them as per scribed 500mg 1 in the morning with breakfast and 500mg 1 in the evening with dinner.

heres some info
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metformin
While looking up metforim I saw this Polycystic ovary syndrome.Of course I can not get that .But reading some peoples comments who have it and take metformin.I noticed appetite suppressant weight loss etc.

Not saying taking medications is a good thing.sometimes its better not to fight against the flow.Especially when I feel this good!!
Hell even the knee isn't hurting as much !!!
Not certain i metioned it took 30 to 45 minutes from tablet number 1 to feel so much better!!

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in November 2008 (average three month reading of 11).. I have been taking Metformin on a daily basis since and with a sensible eating plan and a daily walk i've managed to get off 42 kg (I also try and drink 2 litres of water at work) now my three monthly UDL's sit at 5.2...I no longer have the problem with tingling feet either. I remember being told that taking Metformin can help with weight loss as it boosts the metabolism. i also take 100mg of oroxine a day as my thyroid is not overly active. Definite thumbs up for Metformin from me  and good luck on your journey MickeyJ

Metformin is a useful medication, and the extra benefits described are good.
What I quote below does not mean it should not be used, but not all GPs may yet be aware of this recent study that suggests occasional testing for B12 deficiency id desirable - you may need to prompt yours to check it.
Almost 10% of patients treated with metformin had vitamin B12 deficiency after four years of therapy, compared with fewer than 3% of patients who received a placebo, a study of 390 insulin-dependent type-2 diabetes patients found.

I have a problem with Vitamin D .After hearing a radio ad for a natural product. That claimed to replace Vitamin b after blood pressure meds washed them out the body .I asked could long term use also affect Vitamin D .He said it might not certain though.
will get an extra form for the b12 before my next test.

what I would love to do in the middle of summer (when I fish the most and look indigenous no offence anyone )and I have gone brown from the sun.To get my vitamin d checked just wonder if it would be low then.

It is not structurally related to amphetamines and appears to work by some other mechanism - presumably hormonal.
It is a bit outside my area of expertise, but these brief articles are of some use:

Re: For the medicos METFORMIN

Postby Mickyj » Fri Jul 09, 2010 1:40 pm

Ok so I have revived this topic.
I have had a very strange week health wise. And finally after 2 hours at work today I decided to go home sick and see a quack. My daughter had been urging me to see 1 part of the week.
I told him I had been getting light headed nose bleeds and due to the cold weather at work a runny nose .The runny nose goes away when i sit in a warm room.
Now the light headedness is not head spins and fainting .I just feel light headed and off .As the day goes on at work vision starts to get a bit fuzzy along with the light headedness..But the Vision thing is not all the time .
I asked him( a different doc at the clinic than before) if the metformin could be causing it .No you have been on the metformin for awhile now.I asked about all the blood pressure meds as well casuing low BP he siad no.And my sugar is not going low this week it has been going up on some days.Eat the same food do the same work etc etc.

So he asks me why I haven't had the blood test to test my levels forgtten the name again !!I said the other doc said to wait untuk early August .
No I think we can test u tomorrow .I asked about the vitamin B12 never heard of that and your levels were fine last time .
He surmised I think u have the flu due to the runny nose (been dry since I left work and sat in his surgery). And the 3 blood noses this week!! Now I wasn't picking the old nose  first one I was trying to flood tassie .And at that stage I couldn't stem either flow .at least I was only covered in blood
The second time I was bending over and about to pick up some rubbish after work .Out it flooded .And an hour latter just sitting watching TV out it flooded again.
He asked do u get nose bleeds often no not normally but a fortnight ago I had 1 that lasted most of the day .Now it wasn't gushing all day just the odd amount on and off after the initial flow.
This convinced the doc to test and see if my blood is clotting ok.
He thinks I have the flu with a blood problem!!!
I can tell u I don't have the flu just dizzy at times .
BUT I phoned my good old MUM :ymhug: .She works in the ICU at a local hospital .And she asked one of her "DOCTORS" and they think the blood noses could be caused by my sugar levels going up and down!!.
ME I think the problems happen when the levels go up, which they seem to be doing this week.
So I'm not sure if its the metformin or something else .
Will keep u medicos informed during the week.
BUT the local Doc did say something about keeping my fluids up perhaps I was getting dehydrated at work .

Cheers
Mick

PS
I should ad the Boss wasn't happy that I went to work and not seen a Doctor .And I said I'm a bloke everytime I go I come home with something else wrong with me
