What have Labor actually really won though? The Independents guarantee is for supply only and not to support frivolous no confidence motions. All have said that they will still be voting on each issue on its merits and will not be dictated to by the Labor party as to how they will vote as is the case for Labor MP's. - Clearly the same would be the case if it was Liberal that won their so called support!

I suspect we will have three years of a government that wont pass any major legislation at all because its all to hard, and what will get passed will have to have various slings made to get it voted through which will clearly benefit the local electorate of that member, but is not such a good thing for the rest of us that have to actually pay for it all on the national debt.

I may be completely wrong, but I think the swing the Coalition got this election, despite not being able to form government, means this is just a stay of execution, and with a lacklustre 3 years ahead, the Coalition will be in power in the next election...

Big question is whom will lead them... ;)

Given the strength of the economy and it's growth expected to continue, the box seat is one of incumbency. Not a great time to be in opposition.

Yeah I've been thinking the same thing Sojourner. Having said that it looks like the broadband network will keep rolling out at the very least.

Most likely Labor will also be looking to square up with the tobacco industry for the negative advertising and funding of the Liberals campaign, expect to see the plain packaging go ahead along with several other initiatives to achieve a similar end!

The worst outcome of this is the election commitment to fund a $2bn rail line in Sydney's west, from the budget after the next election.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the upcoming NSW, QLD and Vic (Nov 2010) elections and whether, with a minority Labor govt in power federally, the outcomes of those elections have an impact federally at the next election. Mind you, I'm not convinced they will because Australian voters these days seem to be able to distinguish between the two (apart from that recent period where Labor was in power everywhere except for the Brisbane City Council).

Past State results would indicate your wrong. Beattie, Rann, Bracks and Carr all held sway over minority governments at various points but then increased their vote the next election.

Exactly and with the economy set to kick back into gear the Libs now won't be able to use the "see look what we did" schtick. I'm kinda surprised Labor didn't run a few of the Libs "The union thugs will shut down small business" ads from the last election to drive it home to the public how much absolute shit they talk.

Reakon they should look closer to home.

And the NSW religious right's David Clarke running his usual interference.

By all accounts, he wanted and got his people in Western Sydney, causing a crucial delay in the naming of candidates in several seats.

Amazing he found the time to fight these battles.

Since he prefers to wage war against one-time time protege turned bitter enemy Alex Hawke...

Really? I'm expecting the return of Paul Keating's "Stagflation" once interest rates start to rise. ;)
[Admittedly regardless of who is PM from now on.]
My ALP sources expect Greece to default on its debt soon and this to effect the world economy badly given that Italy, Spain, and Portugal are also dodgy.
