Actually alot of Pacific countries are cancelling tsunami warnings.
...The first wave of the tsunami passed through Midway Island - a small atoll at the north-western end of the Hawaiian archipelago - at about 1125 GMT, bringing a wave of more than 8ft, the local Star Advertiser newspaper reported...

I hadn't thought about Japan having nuclear power plants until I read this..fish wrote:The latest from the nuclear power plant
A JAPANESE safety panel says radiation is 1000 times above normal at a nuclear plant in the country's northeast, Kyodo news agency reports.
Japan's Government has put the radiation level at the Fukushima plant eight times above normal and has stated that there is only "a possibility of a radioactive" leak from the reactor.
People within 10km (6 miles) of nuclear plant have been ordered to evacuate.

In general, it doesn't make sense to build nuclear facilities or storage sites in geologically unstable locations - Japan, NZ, US west coast.

Unfortunately this will probably will probably kill all sensible debate on nuclear power here.
Some people will probably want the Lucas Heights reactor shut down.

If it's safe why are they looking at venting radioactive gases into the atmosphere and why are they sending in military personnel and evacuating the area around the plant?JAS wrote:Interceptor wrote:fish wrote:So much for nuclear power being safe...Brucetiki wrote:One of the reactors is possibly in meltdown, according to local reports

I'd say nuclear power is still safe.
