Hawaii seems to have escaped relatively unscathed so far.

Actually alot of Pacific countries are cancelling tsunami warnings.

Let's hope that can only mean good news.

After the way the video footage demonstrated just how relentlessly unspotable that water is I'd be happy to have a false alarm or authorities being over-cautious and the relatively minor inconvenience of being evacuated.

As I posted this the BBC website just updated with this...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-12714558
...The first wave of the tsunami passed through Midway Island - a small atoll at the north-western end of the Hawaiian archipelago - at about 1125 GMT, bringing a wave of more than 8ft, the local Star Advertiser newspaper reported...

The next wave* of tsunamis are hitting now. These ones a bit more intense but still nothing unusual for Hawaii.

Still on high alert for the next few hours though, but the threat seems to be receeding (my mate recently mentioed that their hotel may not be evacuated at all now).

According to the tv news about 15 minutes ago there was an aftershock measuring 6.6 in central Japan. They're also saying that 2 passenger trains and a ship carrying 100 people have been missing since the first quake :(

The latest from the nuclear power plant

A JAPANESE safety panel says radiation is 1000 times above normal at a nuclear plant in the country's northeast, Kyodo news agency reports.
Japan's Government has put the radiation level at the Fukushima plant eight times above normal and has stated that there is only "a possibility of a radioactive" leak from the reactor.

People within 10km (6 miles) of nuclear plant have been ordered to evacuate.

Some journalists really are heartless/dumb

Kevin Rudd's doing a press conference now about the situation in Japan (and the assistance we'll provide), and one journo asks a question about the Libyan no fly zone

I hadn't thought about Japan having nuclear power plants until I read this..
In general, it doesn't make sense to build nuclear facilities or storage sites in geologically unstable locations - Japan, NZ, US west coast.

The latest on the nuclear power station situation.

THE Japanese Government has declared an atomic emergency and told thousands of residents living near a nuclear plant in Fukushima to evacuate.

Trade minister Banri Kaieda said authorities were nearing a decision to release radioactive steam from a troubled nuclear reactor in a bid to ease a pressure build-up after its cooling system was damaged by a massive earthquake.

"Pressure has risen in the container of the reactor and we are trying to deal with it,"a spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power, which operates the plant, told AFP.

They have something like 53 reactors that generate around 30% of the country's power.
A number of them (including ones in the quake affected area) are of early generation design and have lower safety margins.

I'd say nuclear power is still safe. When you think about how many plants there must be on the planet and how long we've been using nuclear power and how many accidents there have been etc etc etc. and bear in mind that this was an extreme event even for Japan. Nothing is ever going to be 100% safe. How many people are killed by cars everyday...no one is shouting for them to be banned because they kill people.

I'd say nuclear power is still safe.
If it's safe why are they looking at venting radioactive gases into the atmosphere and why are they sending in military personnel and evacuating the area around the plant?
