That's a good question, Jimmy, about whether the Slipper appointment will become a short-term win but a longer-term problem for the government.

As much as I admire your ability to spin whatever I say into something it isn't, I said he was 'unelectable' when he became leader and so far I've been right.

I've also said he'll be chucked out by the Libs, when he was riding high, and I think I'm on the way to being proved right.

More to the point, I've been reading all year that the PM would be chucked out well before now and she's still there, with a bigger majority.

Whilst I detest Abbott as a opportunistic politician devoid of any ethics, conviction or policy, I'm not sure anyone has been proved right or otherwise regarding his quest to become PM yet.

In fact, unfortunately he's odds on to become the next PM and that situation doesn't seem to be changing much soon.

Of course, this is all academic until the next election is played out.

Think the issue with the Liberals is who would replace Abbott, Turnbull has burned his bridges with one of the factions and is likely to be regarded as punting to heavilly towards the left by the factions, and the list of likely candidates falls away pretty rapidly from then on, leading to the point where someone who is largely unknown would have to have a go and likely struggle to get the numbers.

I liked this one as it sums up the process succinctly.
Slipper was under pressure to resign from the Liberal Party over his behaviour.
Then he negotiated a deal that means his transgressions will not be pursued further.
