not being involved anymore, just a question for those that are concerning the umpires
they used to come in before the game and speak to the coach and players and you got a fair idea of what the afternoon would look like from an umpires dessicion point of view
always believed this helped alot
both from a umpires point and then for players and coaches who could work out how the game would be umpired do they still do this
if not i wonder how many coaches make themselves known to the umpires before the game and ask the question, mighten help but it wouldnt make it worst i would believe

First thing I noticed on saturday at Mortlock Park was the size differnece between the two teams. Maybe those red hoops make Woody South look bigger than they are.

Why sould this happen? Should then the coaches and players go into the umpires room and go through structures and explain how they are going to play. Deeman. Turn it up

the geelong effect!

but yeah they certainly looked bigger than us in every position i reckon..

well done to the cats..another frustrating close loss for us against them..they jumped us early with clifford marking everything near him and looking like he was going to kick 15 at one stage and getting helped out by stubbsy.. probably our defence's worst day out this year..but our boys are fairly determined and we kept pegging it back but were kicking points instead of goals..5 points down with 5 minutes to go,we turned it over at critical times and paid the penalty..dropped 2 spots on the ladder..harding was good but rayner was BOG after clifford..how he wasnt in WS's top 5 is anyone guess..

on the B grade, when i came out the rooms at the completion of the game there was plenty of arguing going on between players, umpires and officials..cats got out to 6 goals up at one stage but the lions fought back and a couple of long range goals sealed the win late in the last quarter i was told..both teams would be worthy grand finalists along with TOS and ML

expecting a great game tomorrow versus the cats who we rate very highly..it was a very close tussle last time..the ground is in good condition..we have 4-5 out injured including a couple of midfielders but i note the cats have 3-4 out themselves so its all evened up..we still need 3 wins i believe and if we lose tomorrow its back into the pack..the battle for top spot in the B grade will be a high quality game as well..

lakers and farmers will be very interesting but maybe the home ground advantage will help riddlers boys..will be tight..

expect BOS to defeat uni reasonably easily..

a fired up units await the demons at mofflin and this will be a torrid affair..demons dont want to lose 3 in a row and the units cant afford to drop this one or its probably over for 2012 but who knows in this up and down competition..leaning to careys mob in this one with the return of woodward..

TOS should win by 8-12 goals and stay in the fight for the final 5 as long as they can get their feet out of the deep mud at the snakepit :D

good luck to all..

In the past there have been 3 or 4. M Heath, L Rogers, Vallelonga and another i cant recall the name of. Rogers was the only one who played Saturday. They looked to be quite different teams to when they played 9 weeks ago. they alos have a handful in their div 2 sides as well.

Well done to our B's getting their first win for the season. Its been a long year for them so they got some reward for their effort.

I've refereed rugby league games at club amd state level and I do this, I chat to teams before games so they know who is in charge and I wish them best of luck but also so I make them away of key areas i will be targeting during the game and be hot on.
It just reinforces to the players your expectations of them and makes them aware that they won't be able to get away with crap.
It also helps build a rapport with players which is important.
If your a honest, consistent official they will respect you more as well and youd be suprised how much smoother things go.

Why would you be hot on certain areas and not just umpire the game according to the rules. Yes I agree coaches and umpires should say hello and shake hand but no need for umpires to come in and talk to players about there job for the day.

I guess league is different because teams are coached to push certain boundaries like controlling the ruck area to give their team more time to setup in defence.
Also some weeks or games there may be an unusually large number of penalties or problem areas say high tackles or stripping the ball so it becomes a focus point.
It's probably more to help it becoming a consistent trend and to stop players or teams falling into habits.

Not only that buy it serves as an initial warning to players, by .knowing the expectations prior to the game, they have no excise when punished. 2nd on field infringement and bye bye sit in the bin.

If I was to try and put it into a footy situation prob be say abuse to umpires, i would address players pre game and explain their had been an increase in umpire abuse in recent weeks, it won't be tolerated and any abuse during todays game will result in a 25m penalty, continued abuse and your off.

It also puts the onus back on coaches to reinforce proper standards from players

i know in juniors a lot of umpires actually do but i guess when other umpires have to umpire grown men little different as most who cry to the umpire cost the team the most

Well at Ingle Farm we may have struggled this year on field, but it's fair to say our coach Wayne Knowles is making every media post a winner.. career after coaching?

Umpires at Mawson Lakes on Saturday were pretty good. I think too many people expect too much at this level and don't look at the big picture, as in it's DIV 6. The biggest thing i was impressed with on Saturday was not whether they got decisions right or wrong, but the fact they came in for a drink after the game and sought out Wayne and Geoff and had a cahat and asked what they thought. Excellent effort and there should be more of it.. =D>

Anyway wasn't complaining, BMAC's comment just reminded me of that day and i actually found it quite funny at the time so don't get on your high horses. Thought the idea of this forum is for general chit chat about div 6 footy.
High horses? You can discuss things mate no hassles but you were having a minor bitch. I'm just stating it's a rule that majority of clubs don't take up. To be honest it's the only league I know of that doesn't follow this practice like the holy bible.
If it was something any club took seriously i'm sure you can always find someone to sit in the box and delay delay sinking piss for 3 hours.
agree totally with phantom
just to let the lads know how they look at the game
its no major point but as a coach i would believe that evry little point you could gain would be an advantage
and also the fact i work with a couple of umpires and they have told me in the past that at training they have been told to target certain things and actions
honestly believe if you and your team show common courtesy and respect to the umpires and talk and listen to them you will all benifit

I agree with you Deeman
One problem with umpires giving the pre-match talk - it just gives the players something else to moan about
But you said blah, blah blah.......
I was at a GSFL game on Saturday and yelled out during the B Grade "why dont you blokes try playing footy instead of trying to umpire"

I cant understand how our game struggles to get umpires when there are 5,000 of them on the field every Saturday

sigh of relief to all SAAFL clubs knowing you didn't attend any of their games on the weekend

Woody Sth up all day until 1min left when CLG snatched the lead. BUT FOR SOME REASON TRUE OR NOT, the final siren blew 45sec too early when the ball was to be thrown in in WS forward 50, right near the behind post. Some confusion and even the umpire agreed it was blown too early!!!
The umpire was going to make an official report about the incident.
The umpiring for that game was average, both umpires made woeful decisions, but i did think that CLG umpire was the worse of the 2!
So that now leaves CLG clear at the top with WS sitting 2nd.
Now onto the A grade, well umpired for most, couple little woeful decisions but you get that. WS lead for most if not all of the day and would get themselves into a comfy lead (5-6 goals) but CLG would always chip away and fight back to within a few points. WS couldnt seem to put CLG away. Cliffford was OUTSTANDING today kicking 8, he gave the CLG DEFENSE A BATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The fullback couldnt compete with bomber in the air. Stubby was also very good kicking 5. Harding was good across half back today for WS.

yeah gr8 coverage of the the game you knob - the CLG b's were down by 6 goals and slowly pegged back the lead and hit the front with 2 minutes to go. Woody sth team of old men fell in a hole and didnt deserve to win in the end - the behaviour of your umpire was a disgrace - lose with some dignity!! The A's was a cracking game and probably the better team didnt win in the end - bad kicking is bad footy - ask bomber who the best team they have played this year and he will say CLG!

Lose with some dignity......
