A funny sign on a board in a paddock just as you go into Callington. It advertises the Eagles AGM coming up in 6 days, reckoning it might be the end of an era. If thats the extent of their publicity no wonder no-one cares. I haven't read or heard a thing about it anywhere else and I have family living locally. Pretty odd if you ask me.

Cheers for the 'heads up' DD. Your eyesight is better than mine though. I looked for the sign today and could barely read it due to 2 metre high weeds. Like you, I have heard nothing whatsoever about any AGM until your post. I am local and read all info including the 'Courier'. I'm a bit perplexed as to why the Eagles expect to stay afloat when no-one knows anything about any meetings. Callington Show had a huge turn-out last week-end. Surely this was a golden opportunity to canvas support?

This is ridiculous! Callington officials were at a recent HFL Meeting with all other country division clubs; Callington nominated that they would in fact have 2 junior teams as well as 2 senior teams in 2013..... This news indicates they in no way intend on playing C'Grade considering the C'Grade don't require juniors or a second senior comp...

Now we're hearing of locals not knowing anything about the club AGM which beggs the question that if the nothing is changing and the HFL dont do anything then the country division is in for another year of the same!

yeah they only made the AGM an event on facebook yesterday and its on sunday so that shows you how organised it is.
surely if they played C Grade then the HFL would let their junior teams play in country div?

A quick note about the AGM was tacked up at the local deli last night. It said that anyone who cared about the club should attend. 3 days notice, what a joke. I don't live in the town but know many who do and no-one gives a rats.

I heard Gums have been chasing past and present locals to sign up for next year already. my mail was both Hanna boys and Matt Prowse already signed up. Possibly both the Kavanagh brothers to return after disappearing for a few years. not sure where they have been playing or if they would be useful but still locals. They are also hoping for the return of some good juniors that went to birdwood last year.
its good to see their cheque book staying at home and not down on the northern flats for once. Also might be trying to stop the leaking of locals to kersbrook.

WHEN WILL THE HFL GET THIS INTO THEIR THICK SKULLS??? WE ARE ALL OVER CALLINGTON. 4 Teams next year? What a load of crap. I have only one question which someone can hopefully answer honestly in one sentence here. Who the hell is enabling this ridiculous mess to potentially progress for yet another year?
Older, wiser and been there. But still love that grassroots country footy.

Despite the comments from the regular trouble stirer's, we had a reasonable turnout at the AGM, and despite what they say, it had been advertised locally (store, around the oval etc..) for weeks now, as well as the local papers several weeks ago, and the large community notice board coming into Callington! I think they may need an eye exam!

The Callington United Eagles FC and the Bridgewater Raiders FC are indeed working towards a amalgamation, with the full support of the HFL.

A proposal has been tabled and discussed by the 2 committee's, who have both approved it. It was put to the Callington members at todays AGM, and was past, and just awaits the approval of the Bridgewater members at their AGM in a few weeks, but from the general consensis, this looks to be a formality.

Both parties agree that the deal is in the best interest of the future of both clubs. More details to come once it is ratified and a joint working committee is established. However, the combined club will be looking at fielding all teams from modifieds through to seniors, including a C Grade squad. However, the competition is still to be decided pending any relegation decision. The current view is to move to / continue in Central Division.

This is ridiculous, the two worst clubs in the HFL are merging and playing in the Central Division?! This can in no way be serious?
So if the raiders bring the money and the players what does callington bring? An oval 45 minutes away from Bridgewater?
Question - When was the last time Callington had two individual senior teams let alone two standalone juniors? By this I mean teams not requiring players from other grades playing each week?!
Magically I take it that

It does all seem a little odd on the surface. Merger or takeover I wonder? (i.e another Uraidla “Districts”..a club who fail to recognise the history of the clubs they swallowed up).

Will be keen to get more info on the pros/cons for each club. CUE would see this as a better option than dying off completely or running around in C Grade, and will give any juniors in the area an opportunity to remain aligned to a club. From Bridgy’s point of view, apart from the use of the oval in the wetter months, I can’t see any other genuine short term positives. If they were doing this purely for the sake of the oval then they could have possibly done what they did this year and play at Cally during wet months, or look elsewhere like Cornerstone.

Sure they may get a handful of seniors/juniors from Cally to top up their existing numbers but at what cost to the club. How did Bridgy go for numbers this season across the grades? How many committed seniors have CUE have on their books for 2013? Cally could be a potential growth area in years to come and may result in more juniors coming through. But who knows really...

Interesting times ahead.

(and for the record Cally oval is 20-25 mins from Bridgy, rather than 45..)
SAFC- 60 years...
StKFC- 58 years..

The idea of the amalgamated teams playing in Central is a great idea! The central clubs will now be affected by callington first hand. imo this will result in callington finaly being turfed.

I've heard that Callington's existing seniors (all 20 of them) will be playing as Bridgy's C Grade, with the better ones? playing higher I guess.....

Basically what Callington will bring is an oval which will be used during the wetter months when Bridgy is unplayable, and this will also allow Bridgy to host a final. Also junior numbers and importantly possibly sponsorship from the mines. From a recruiting sense they believe that they will have better chances of recruiting when they tell recruits they don't have to play at Bridgy oval all year! Interesting one!

Hahahaha people dont want to play at Bridgey because they're ordinary! Pay a bloke enough coin and he'll play in prickles!

I can say quite accurately that the sponsorship from the mines has minimal impact as it's only been as high as 5k....
